Throughout my learning, I can now identify three kinds of reasons why people may experience challenges living with diabetes. I will discuss each one in turn, including my knowledge of Anwar and his family.
After Anwar was first diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, one of the obstacles that he had to overcome was his cultural beliefs. Although Anwar has been a resident of the UK for many years and speaks English, his first languages are Punjabi and Urdu. It soon became clear to the healthcare practitioner that Anwar was struggling with his change in diet. This could be due to many factors. There is firstly the reluctance to stop eating traditional foodstuffs as this was central to Anwar’s identity. It wasn’t clear if he knew the content of his traditional foods or whether he was able to read written English on food packets to establish its content. It became apparent the diet Anwar was given was specific to Western foods and eating patterns, therefore deeming the diet culturally inappropriate and leaving him not being able to stick to the treatment programme. Furthermore, in many Muslim households, it is tradition that the women prepare all family meals. It is likely that if Anwar was confused about what to eat, Hansa wouldn’t have knowledge on it either. In this culture it is also seen as rude not to accept hospitality.
Exercise could be another stumbling block as far as culture is concerned, especially for women. Exposing their bodies to the opposite sex are an absolute no to Muslim women A married woman must also have the permission of her husband beforehand, and must ensure that none of her duties as a wife are being sacrificed as a result of her activities.
