In JK Rowlings Speech The Fringe
In J.K. Rowling’s speech “The Fringe Benefits of Failure, and the Importance of Imagination,” she explains how failure is not always a bad thing. I mean, at the moment it is, but in the long run it normally works out to your advantage. She talks about how her parents always thought that her active imagination was not really a very good thing because it would never pay a mortgage or any other payments, but she always felt like she was destined to be a story writer. She says that failure to a graduate from Harvard is probably completely different than the average person’s failure. To the average person even getting in to Harvard would be a huge success. She goes to say that failure for her taught her many lessons that have shaped her to who she is today. In Rowling’s speech I connected with a lot of her quotes. I feel like they spoke to me more than the big picture that she was trying to get across. The first quote is “Ultimately, we all have to decide for ourselves what constitutes failure, but the world is quite eager to give you a set of criteria if you let it.” This quote speaks to me because I was having second thoughts about college. I did not know if it was the best thing for me, because at the time I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, but as I have started taking psychology I have realized that this is what I am interested in. Everyone else was telling me that I need to go to college to get a good job and that I need to be successful, but the fact is there are plenty of people that make a perfectly fine living that have never touched a book since junior high. I just feel like before you try to tell people how to live their life you need to make sure that you have your life in check. Another quote that I connected with is “it is impossible to live without failing at something unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all- in which case, you fail by default.” I feel like this quote should speak to a lot of people

The quote I have chosen is, “Success consists of going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm”. This is one of Winston Churchill's most well known quotes. This quote was said during his reign as the Prime Minister of Great Britain. It is unknown as to where this quote came from but I found it to be very captivating. I feel like Churchill is trying to get the point across that in life it is normal to not be perfect. Everyone makes mistakes and each failure shapes you as a person. Churchill is saying that if you put your mistakes in the past without changing who you are, it makes you stronger and more successful than someone who fails to do so. Being afraid of failure gets you nowhere in life so Churchill is stating that everyone should strive with great enthusiasm in order to be their best self.…

As I read J.K Rowling’s commencement speech, I began to see what she was getting at. Rowling was explaining that when she was given a commencement speech at graduations that she couldn’t remember it, but then adds in some advice. The advice was to make yourself stand out and not to be afraid of during so; then she told the audience to be a “gay wizard”. She put humor in while also trying to give some advice to the…

This quote can be applied to many different circumstances in your life. This is why I believe it stands out so much to me. When I first read this quote I thought about football, but then I started thinking about it in a more broad perspective. If you apply it to your job, family, sports, etcetera, it all comes back to what the quote clearly states, no matter what the situation you always have a chance to succeed. Even when you think you've hit rock bottom, if you work to better yourself and your circumstances then you have succeeded. I also see it as when others think you've failed, you can truly judge yourself on how you respond. I always judged success on winning or…

"The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short, but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark." This quote is significant to a wide variety of people for the mere fact that everyone goes through this. I think that at one point or another, most people will realize goals are meant to be set high rather than low. I also believe people often experience this danger through becoming lazy. The human race is much too powerful to be unproductive. If we set our aim too low, we become incapable of reaching our goals. True satisfaction comes from hard work and morals. An example of this comes from literature. It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini, tells the hardships of a young man who becomes suicidal and checks himself into a psychiatric hospital. The young man, Craig was at his deepest set of depression when he had no motivation. However, when Craig stayed positive with his goals set high; he overcame depression. Another example comes from a film called "Rudy." When Rudy experiences pain and hardships he refuses to be let down. As Rudy reaches for a goal most believe to be out of his reach, he does his best and proves them wrong. From history, we learn that Rosa Parks was a woman who embodied this quote. It was the year 1955 in Alabama, when Parks refused to obey a bus driver's order that she give up her seat and make room for a white passenger. Her action showed she had something to prove, and she was not going to be pushed around anymore.…

The value of failure is something you should learn in life, because failure can teach you a new mentality to do things, like working hard and trying to get better or quitting because someone can’t deal with failure.…

Many people expect us to fail. "When you reach for a book it closes its door in your face" (1252). I can relate this to life because everytime you try to do something productive or good , there is always something that will hold you down from doin this. Every time you think you got something right its wrong in somebody elses eyes. "When you conjugte a verb it is in the wrong language" (1252). I believe that…

I agree with this quote because I believe it is true, college does not guarantee happiness but it does guarantee a chunk of money they take. Most Americans agree with society norms that college is always going to get you to a better place with a happier life. A quote from Lawrence B. Shlack states” Not more than 20 percent of careers in the work world of tomorrow will require a four a four year degree” which shocks me knowing that almost every person I know plans to go to college when jobs are soon not required a four year degree. In a letter written by Angel B. Perez, he talks about how if you want a successful you need to learn to fail. With this in mind when he states” Failure can’t be taught in a classroom” worries me about the people who will be sitting in the classroom for another four years of their life and expect that…

    The Value of Failure

When Thomas Edison was working on the invention of the light bulb he said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Even though Thomas Edison did not call his mistakes failures, he learned from them, and continued to try other combinations until he finally succeeded. People fail, just like Thomas Edison, but they can make the choice to learn from their mistakes. William Zinsser, the author of “College Pressures” discusses the importance and value failure can have in people’s lives by relating it to the experiences students face while in college. The significance of failure is very critical in people’s lives because it can help them to learn from their mistakes, and it gives them motivation.…
