Improving the Performance of Quality Improvement Teams
“State and local governments currently spend about $300 billion annually on health care and health care accounts for nearly one-third of state budgets. This high level of medical spending, combined with the increased need for services and reduced revenues driven by an economic recession, creates enormous financial difficulties for states, as their experience with budget shortfalls over the past few years illustrates. States have an urgent need to modernize the medical care system to improve the quality of care while simultaneously lowering its cost” (Cutler, 2010). It is important in striving to improve in the performance of quality to have superior teams. “Performance improvement (PI) is a methodology for improving the quality of institutional and individual performance” (Quality Improvement and Performance Improvement: Different Means to the Same End). To be able to improve in the quality of the performance as a team the individual first has to begin with themselves as an individual and they have to want to improve on working as a team to help in improving their teammates as well. There are and will be several potential barriers that may exist in the healthcare system that will make a specific quality improvement project very or a bit complicated to put into operation.
