Nomads were wanderers that had no technical home. Four groups of nomads were the Turks, Afghan and Seljuk, the Vikings, the Mongols, and the Huns. When the Mongols went to Europe, they brought the Bubonic Plague; they caused the reunification of the Russians, and helped start Pax Mongolica. They allowed the conquered to keep their ways of life and religions as long as they obeyed the foreign rulers. The decentralization of Japan and Western Europe was helpful and a hindrance by being more organized, using feudalism and causing more chaos.…

In the 1920’s, my ideal date would take place in New York City, and would start around noon and probably end sometime in the late night. First, I picked up my date at her parent’s house. She had a nice picnic lunch packed, and we were going to walk to Central Park. The picnic consisted of dry sausage, prosciutto, and a mixture of olives, an assortment of cheeses, some tomatoes in olive oil, and a loaf of Italian bread. It was a long walk to Central Park, but we were hungry, and we knew that once we ate, it would be a relaxing walk back. We had our picnic on a little hill in the park, overlooking a nice pond. All around us, there were trees with their leaves changing colors, and children throwing a ball around. On the walk back, we talked about many things, like life, politics, jobs, business, and what we eventually would want to do with our lives. After that, we talked about what we would like to do later. We decided to stay at her parent’s house for dinner, and then maybe go to a nightclub afterwards. When we got back, I helped her parents set up the table for dinner while she got changed and freshened up. After a nice Italian dinner of broccoli rabe and sausage, some more Italian bread, and a dessert of cannolis and gelato, my date and I decided to go out to a nightclub. We took the New York City subway, and I could have sworn that we saw Henry Ford standing not too far away from us. When we got to the club, The Back Room, we found that it was already quite crowded, and that everybody else was dressed like us. The guys all wore suits and ties, some with hats and some without. The women, however, were a different story. They all wore clothes from the new “flapper” fashion, but that’s where the similarities stopped. My date was wearing a sleeveless dress that ended just before the knees, shoes and stockings, and she had her hair cut short, was wearing a pearl necklace and carried a purse. We spent most of the night there, smoking and drinking beer…

    1. Conventional representations of the South tend to portray the region in a simplistic manner and to reduce Southerners to stereotypes of shiftless hillbillies, indolent belles, and intolerant bigots. While many of the stories we have read invoke similar stereotypes, the authors seem to subvert these conventional assumptions to present more complex and sympathetic representations of this region and its inhabitants. For this topic, you are to choose one of the texts we have read and write a 4-6 page essay in which you analyze the author’s representation of the South. You need to develop an argument that covers the following topics: 1) How are the South and Southerners presented? 2) What conventional assumptions about the South does the text address? 3) How does the text reinforce or challenge these stereotypes? 4) How do other textual elements (i.e., setting, tone, symbolism, and point of view) develop the story’s portrayal of the South?…

Shelley shows the creature to be monstrous due to society and due to the failure of his creature, Frankenstein. This relates to the views of society in the 1800’s. Dependency theory is defined as a theory that attributed Third World underdevelopment to its economic and political dependence on the advanced industrial nations, also known as the core or First World Nations (Handelman, p.19). Moreover, Theotonio Dos Santos (1971) describes dependency as a “historical condition which shapes a certain structure of the world economy such that it favors some countries to the detriment of others and limits the development possibilities of the subordinate economies.” (p.226).…

The last decade of the Twentieth Century has unmasked the hypocrisy of the Indian politician. A popular Chief Minister had to spend months in jail. A former Prime Minister had to appear before the court a number of times in connection with bribing of M.Ps. Another former Minister was remanded to judicial custody while facing charges of aiding and abetting smugglers. It seems as if Indian democracy has become a breeding ground for crooks and cheats.…
