Importance of Service Learning
Abstract
Service Learning combines community service with classroom instruction, focusing on critical and reflective thinking as well as personal and civic responsibility.

Why Service learning is Important in Nursing Service-learning basically tests nursing concepts in the real world through service to community or non-profit organization. It promotes hands-on learning by fulfilling community needs, promoting civic responsibility and actively reflecting and reinforcing classroom learning which in turn develops strengths that lasts a lifetime. Service learning is an important part of the nursing curriculum because learning takes place not only in the classroom but also in the community. On one hand, service learning allows learners to apply classroom theories to real and practical situations by connecting it to the needs of the local and global community. It involves critical reflection, personal discovery and an agreement of values for life and skills for the workplace. These make it extremely important to nursing curriculum On the other hand , service learning helps students gain an understanding of their ability to impact their community and make a recognizable difference. Students are encouraged to reflect on their responses to the needs of others, the impact those responses have on thought, and the subsequent action needed to change existing conditions.
. In particular, service learning offers ways to improve partnerships between university and community agencies as it extends learning beyond the traditional classroom. It brings about an understanding of student personal responsibilities related to social justice and an appreciation for the diversity of our global community. The importance of service learning cannot be over emphasized. Not only does it involves collaboration in addressing significant community needs but also enriches the traditional classroom learning which .fosters the development of civic and social responsibility

~Mahatma Gandhi. Service is to help others in need or not in need. I am excited to try to do even more service in the future. I have many ideas for the school when it comes to service. One idea is to help children in hospitals by just making them something like a card or decoration. My dad is working with a company that is rebuilding St. Peter’s Hospital and I know that some of the kids in the children’s section of the hospital would love something to cheer them up. Right now for service I give my old clothes and toys to my younger cousin and if she doesn’t want them, we take them to the Salvation Army. Also like I had mentioned in the first paragraph we donate over three or four hundred dollars a year to the WGY Christmas wish organization. That money goes to poor families so the parents can buy presents or food for their children. I know I need to work on this skill in particular but I have many good…

The first service learning project I completed was in 2006 which was a participation in tutoring a year six student in the Aquinas College junior school. This tutoring was during winter. After the first week I found it difficult to complete three sport trainings a week (1 in Melville), an after school guitar lesson, a hockey game on Friday nights plus the tutoring program, I thought I was going to have to stop the tutoring and complete service learning in a different area. But after the first week of tutoring I found that tutoring became a priority, I felt that Ricardo found the tutoring much help and seemed to benefit from it. I finished the tutoring program without missing one session.…

Service learning is an education method that is used to provide the student with the ability to discover themselves, become productive and helpful citizens, and to gain academic knowledge while doing so. I think service learning is included in this course because it helps us to become more connected with our surroundings. Great teachers are active in there community and know the struggles that the community faces and wants to help. When a teacher understands her community she can better understand her students. Also, I think it is included to teach us that we can always find time to do what is important. Quite often we trick…

Service-learning i.e. community service with organizations or out-class opportunities for communicational learning. First, it provides students an eye-open experience by “pushing” students out of their comfort zones to view the outside world. Second, service-learning helps students gain communication skills because they have to talk and interact with different group of people. Not only to view and to talk, but also to think. Students make connections between what we learn from the book and what we actually do during the service thus students make reflections to think about themselves and to make differences in the community. From service-learning, I personally learned that a lot of the poor who go to the “soup kitchens” are actually psycho…
