IMPORTANCE OF LEADERSHIP IN ORGANISATIONS
Businesses, governments, communities and organizations in general need good, devoted leaders. The most common problem in organisations is the lack of effective leadership. It affects employees with an enormous impact making them wonder if they know what their company’s vision is or why senior management does not communicate with them. For some reason organizations seem to think that if they have someone who is ‘in charge’ then at the same time they do have a leader and this is the biggest trap they are falling into simply because it isn’t true.
Who is this very important person called a leader then? There are many definitions to describe a leader. He is the one who guides and inspires others in action or opinion. One who takes the lead in any enterprise or movement and one who is followed. Leader is a role. John Quincy Adams, 6th American US President describes a leader in following words : ‘ If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more , do more and become more , you are a leader’.
What is the leadership then? Many people believe that leadership is simply being the first, biggest or the most powerful. Leadership in organizations has a different and more meaningful definition. Very simply put, a leader is interpreted as someone who sets direction in an effort and influences people to follow that direction. How they set that direction and influence people depends on a variety of factors that I will consider later on below. To really comprehend the "territory" of leadership, you should briefly scan some of the major theories, notice various styles of leadership and review some of the suggested traits and characteristics that leaders should have.
