In today’s job market, it is very competitive for even the most basic of jobs so additional certification could give you an edge over the competition. Almost all jobs require some kind of knowledge in IT and without proper certification; your skills cannot be formally recognized. Any kind of IT certification you acquire will not only increase your earning potential but shows employers your willingness to learn new skills. A Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) has the skills to operate Microsoft software which is used almost everywhere worldwide. These types of specialists “meet the demand for the most up-to-date skills on the latest Microsoft technologies” (Microsoft, 2011). This type of knowledge would not only make someone more appealing to employers but would benefit myself in business because I could apply this type of knowledge learned to a variety of tasks. The successful completion of one of the exams is required to gain MOS certification. Certification in MOS: Microsoft Excel would be ideal for anyone who is entering the business field, as numbers are often expressed on spreadsheets. This type of certification demonstrates that “Expert users are proficient with advanced formulas, functions, and data analysis tools. Expert users can manipulate data for analysis, presentation, and collaboration” (Microsoft, 2011). This type of certification is quite complex but would demonstrate your superior knowledge of the program, thus giving you the advantage over other applicants. Earning a certification in CompTIA A+ “proves competence in areas such as installation, preventative maintenance, networking, security and troubleshooting” (CompTIA, 2011). The characteristics of this certificate would be great for any employee, especially someone who deals directly with computers on a regular basis.
