Importance of Faith and Prayer in Islam

The quote from the textbook “understanding religion in a global society” gives tremendous significance to faith and rituals of the Islamic culture, both of which are greatly highlighted in the holy book of Quran. Just as without the roots, a tree cannot survive, similarly, without faith, performing highly valuable rituals are useless. The main source where Muslims gain an enormous amount of faith is from reading the holy book of Quran. One must fully believe and understand the messages written in the Quran to have complete faith in it as a Muslim individual. For centuries, the Quran has been preserved through writing and memorization. In fact, today Quran is the only book, which can be fully memorized by millions of people all over the world. Over the years, many other religious books were re-written and although these scriptures may have been improvised by their writers, the Quran still remains the same. The originality of the holy book for over a decade is a huge fascination on its own. Since its original script is from God, the Quran is able to hold a great extent of value in the hearts of its followers and even today, this holy book of Quran holds great importance to Muslims. The term religious rituals, as explained in our text, are basically “any repeated or stylized actions and words that have their significance explicitly or implicitly tied to the Holy”. In simpler terms, repeated actions or words that relate an individual to the Absolute (God) can be considered a religious ritual. Just as every religion has many of its own unique set of rituals, Islam also has some of its own. The religious rituals in Islam are a few in numbers, but each hold great importance to a Muslim. The quote from the text reminds Muslims to keep up with prayers. The ritual of prayer, known as Salat, is the second of the five Pillars of Islam.
