The potential impact of mobile phones usage on social and educational structures in developing countries.

‘The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) recently declared that developing countries now account for about two‐thirds of the mobile phones in use, compared with less than half of subscriptions in 2002’ (Tryhorn, 2009). Therefore more and more poor people have now access to this wireless communication technology. It is known that using any technology brings along many changes so as to be more efficient and effective in how we do things. Similar is the case with mobile phones but its accompanying changes is moulding the individual as well as the society. Poor countries are benefiting a lot economically with the adoption of the cellular technology. However the growing effects on the social and educational structures are often misinterpreted. This paper argues about these likely changes on society based on the current trend of transformations in the daily lives and needs of individuals in the developing nations. Introduction
Mobile phones are considered not just a communication tool, but also a necessity in growing economies nowadays. The popularity of cell phones lies in their appealing advantages as opposed to landlines. First and foremost the mobile network is vey cost effective to setup for any country as it does not require high investments on landlines. Thereafter reduced handset cost combined with introduction of prepaid billing systems and the liberalisation of telecoms markets have been the primary drivers in promoting the rapid adoption of mobile technology in the underdeveloped world (Eureka moments, 2009).
