Abstract
Problem of salinity is one of the main concern for south-west region of bangladesh. Natural growth of crop production is seriously hampered by salinity intrusion. Since rice is the staple food, food safety of Bangladesh largely depends upon productivity of rice. But over the last two decades rice production is hindered in many ways. Specially production trend of rice in Khulna and Shatkhira district indicates an alarming signal to the domestic demand of this area. Land for rice cultivation is replaced by shrimp cultivation which increases salinity. Salinity intrusion seriously hits to the volume of rice production. This study aims to points out value of lost production of rice occurred by salinity intrusion. Though replacement of rice production generates high return, but its long-run cost is much more. Local production of rice has been decreased significantly. Ecological balance is deteriorating adversely. Unemployment and migration problem is getting worse gradually. Even at a stage, shrimp production is also declining. All these are the result of salinity arised from unplanned shrimp cultivation. However, the situation of Bangladesh should serve as a model of how to encourage sustainable rice production through commercial farming while abating adverse environmental impacts estuarine system.
