What is the impact of religion on American government and society?
There are many factors that have an impact on the American government and society. One main factor is religion. Religion, defined by Webster’s Dictionary, is a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs. The predominant religion of the United States is Christianity, and the minorities include Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, and Atheism. The United States has a long history of being known as a “Melting Pot” because of the many different nationalities and cultures and with that you will have many different types of religions. Religion affects many things in American society such as politics, economics, and education.
American government was founded on the concept of freedom of religion; this made America a safe haven for religious tolerance. During a time of religious intolerance in Europe, they immigrated to British colonies in North America because of the various opportunities for jobs and religious freedom. After the American Revolution, they then created the Articles of Confederation and after the failure of it they created the Constitution of the United States. Even though America tries to avoid having a national religion, American society and government was built on the strong Christian ideals of its founders.
Starting with the Great Awakening of the early 1770’s, America has always had an strong Christian identity. In the earlier history of America, abolitionist Christians helped end slavery in America when they thought everybody deserved freedom. For example “IN GOD WE TRUST” appears on all forms of America currency. The motto was put on the currency during the Civil War because of religious
