Immigration Post
I read the article "Senate Dems to Obama: We're with you on immigration." The article said the senate Democrats are backing up President Barack Obama’s promise to use executive action on immigration. More people among congressional Republicans aren't liking Obama’s pledge to go around Congress on stopping deportations. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and other
Democratic leaders sent a letter to Obama asking him to use his “wellestablished” executive powers to improve as much of the immigration system as he could. The Obama administration is considering to expand all the undocumented immigrants who would qualify for deferred deportations by using criteria such as longevity in the United States and family ties. My article was really interesting. I think immigration is a very important concept to learn about.
It happens all over the world for various reasons some people come to see their family, they come for job opportunities and education. I really liked the discussion of this week. Many of our family members may have immigrated here from several countries and it's significant to learn about it. http://www.politico.com//story/2014/11/senatedemstoobamawerewithyouonimmigration1

With the changes across the DHS, the White House continues to push for the amnesty-first approach. They want to cut the spending on border security and lighten the restrictions on the immigration policy. By reducing the funding and changing the policies, it will undermine the progress the DHS has had over the last decade in fixing the border issues and giving the U.S. credibility with immigration laws.…

The case law to date does not clearly provide any legal limits on the President’s use of authority when placing prohibitions on the entrances of immigrants into America. The Act provides very broad authority as to how the president of the United States may do so. When read carefully, the Act clearly does not authorize the president to prevent immigration based on country of origin, nevertheless, it does authorize the president's decision of preventing the immigration of aliens based on his stance. For example, the president shall have the power to place temporary restrictions on immigration based on country of origin if he deems that the well-being of the United States could be adversely affected by any immigrant or any foreign country. However, he is not recommended, nor is he permitted, to prohibit any alien or class of aliens from immigrating to the United States based on factors that include bias’ along with sex, income, and religious…

Everyone was talking about the reform, shortly before the effective date of SB 1070 in Arizona which was the hardest immigration law of the country. This law included tough measures against immigrants. It stipulated, for example that the police officers had to control every person where they suspected they may find illegal immigrants. Even if someone from a completely different reason, for example for a traffic offense has contact with the police, his immigration status must be checked. The wearing of this document is obligatory although it is not actually prescribed in the United States. Obama had therefore criticized the law. The Federal Justice Department complained about it and the Senate worked out a draft for a federal law. Everyone agreed that something must be done but the nation was divided. The Democrats wanted to allow the citizenship for illegal immigrants under certain conditions but the Republicans denounced these plans as "mass amnesty" and requested for a strengthening of border security and tough measures against illegal immigrants. In 2010 Obama's immigration reform failed because only 55 politicians voted in the Senate. 60 votes were needed almost all Republicans voted against it. In May 2011 Obama took a new approach by making a speech in El Paso. On the one hand, he emphasized his hardness at the border security to reassure conservative Whites. He had increased to 20,000 men to the…

Members of Congress and President Obama have been working in earnest to deliver on their promise to overhaul immigration this year. Mr. Obama would clearly prefer a bipartisan bill, and last week the Senate Judiciary Committee held its first hearing on possible changes in immigration law. News reports last weekend suggested that the White House would fashion its own bill should negotiations between Republican and Democratic supporters of reform collapse.…

The United States as the great "melting pot" has become a myth. [Explain what melting pot means: It means that this is a place where all sorts of people (race, ethnicity, religion, sexuality, etc.) can live] The reality is that there is a continued geographic concentration of minority groups in certain regions and in specific metropolitan areas. This holds true especially for Hispanics and Asians, who tend to enter the US through "gateway cities" such as Los Angeles and New York and then remain there.…

Obama’s proposed Executive Action is aspiring to the headache that the effect would be gone in a short period of time and the pain will come back. It is a temporary relief to some but also the root of new problems. Legalizing millions of immigrants and providing them a status would do nothing to stop others to come undocumented to the United States. Having more and more immigrants enter this country in seek to join their fellow members of the Latin@ community so they too could live the ‘American dream’. Unfortunately this would only cause a sea of immigrants to want to cross the border even more then they are now. Causing an increase in future mistreatment of…

Immigration has been a long standing issue in America and is still one of the most predominant topics in politics today. On November 14, 2012, Hector Becerra published an article in the The New York Times that talks about the belief Latinos are the main source that caused President Barack Obama to be re-elected. Since President Obama has devised a plan, known as the Dream Act, has given the Latino population hope but has also brought some negativity into the past election. Although many feel most are powerless, the fast-growing Latino electorate is expected to double by 2030 (Becerra 2012).…

I’m interested in attending this seminar because the topic of immigration is heavily intertwined with Spanish language speakers. In my semester in Ecuador, I had some significant conversations with friends trying to obtain visas to the United States. One of my study abroad directors has a son that lives in the US and cannot even obtain a visa to simply visit him. I believe that immigration is a complex topic more about injustices than the number of people entering the US. My good friend from high school just gained her citizenship after living in the US since she was three years old. My various personal connections with immigrants cause my high level of investment in the topic. I believe this seminar would give me a broader understanding of…

When I first walk into class on day 1 of sociology, I did not know what to expect. I did not know much about immigrants however, I knew that I was a child of an immigrants. I though immigration was just a typical way of emphasizing the difference between a foreign and citizen. I know immigrants get an alien card for a minimum of five years before able to apply for citizenship, but only if you come legally. For those who come illegally, I did not know anything about them. I did not even know that they are able to attend to school. I used to think of immigrants as people of color such as Black Africans, Asians, and Latinos because the media always shows the minority immigrants such as when talking about immigration. The media also never shows a white immigrants from Europe or even blaming on them as the job takers unlike the minorities. Therefore, I though the best to describe immigrants is by race which is pretty racism but, I did not know at all because I never hear or see anyone call the…
