The media selection that I choose was an article in the New York Times about the immigration laws in Arizona, and the changes being made to them. Arizona has always had issues with illegal immigrants more than any other state due to the fact that the state borders the Mexican territory, but as years go on the problem has swirled out of control. The Article I read states the governor’s plan to strengthen the laws that already exist to control the problem they have with illegal immigrants. The way the state plans on strengthening the law is by implementing sub law 1070, which gives law enforcement the rite to detain any individual that cannot provide proper documentation on their legal status in the United States. The article that I read did not seem to be bias in any shape or fashion it seemed to be more informative than anything else. The articles intent was to inform the reader of the governor’s plan to implement the sub law, and the reaction of the people it affected. This sub law is a very controversial issue because in way contradicts everything America is built on, and it will also cause more racial profiling, because most of the immigrants in Arizona are Mexican. Another reason why I feel the article was unbiased is because it gave two sides to the argument. It gave the reason why the bill was being passed, which was to stop the crime being caused in the U.S. by the illegal immigrants. The other side to this article speaks about the people against the law. The reason why they are against the law is because they don’t believe the law will help solve the problem of illegal immigration, but rather cause more racial profiling amongst law enforcement, which in turn infringes on the rites of Americans. The media coverage of this issue has encouraged prejudice in way because now people feel that a lot of Mexican immigrants are here illegal, which is not true.
