You made a great point when you mentioned that education is significant to one's success in life. This week reading assignment helped me to acquire knowledge about the conflicting functions of education. For instance, “function 1 socialization: assist in learning to be productive member of society through the passing on of culture” (Ballantine & Hammack, 2012, p. 29). For example, students may have “different experiences depending on their gender, social class, racial, or ethnic background” (Ballantine & Hammack, 2012, p. 29). For example, a student who is low income will receive a different type of education than a member of the upper class. I am excited to learn about the dilemmas that are presently faced and what we can do to create…

Prior to listening to Ira Glass on “Back to School” there were a lot of ideas and beliefs of my own on education. I thought that all it would talk about, would be the power that SES (Social Economic Status) holds for education. It should be known that at times I tend to believe statements to be true without proper research on my behalf if they are stated as statistics or statements giving credit to scientist conducting correlational research (please keep in mind that this was prior to Dr. Romero’s speech about not believing all types of correlational research). Another belief, I have is the argument of Nature Vs Nurture.…

My father became ill and disabled, and my family and I went from having everything to being limited on various things. That was when it struck to me that without an education one can not have a secure future and that my life would stay the same. So I began to take school seriously and successfully graduated high school with a 3.0 grade point average. I immediately knew teaching was what I wanted to do. Life is different now for my family and I, we moved to a new place, away from family and friends; but I can not let that interfere with my education. I strongly encourage everyone to do the same. As we progress through life we find ourselves at a vulnerable state in which we begin to question our purpose. We begin high school with the belief that the teachers will guide us and help us attain the knowledge that is required to progress to a college or a university. The students sit in class expecting to be taught in a manner in which they can comprehend and grasp everything that the instructor has to give. But in reality todays educators tend to teach by having students copy down a full board of notes filled with the information that the instructor is supposed to immerse the students into.…

Throughout elementary and middle school, I always thought education wasn’t as important as other things such as the sports I played, hanging out with friends and doing things that I enjoyed. I would often find myself blowing off homework and doing it last minute or not even doing it all. I’ve changed quite a bit since those days, but it took me some time to realize that what I was doing wasn’t any good for me. I believe that at some point in your life, you have to realize that education is everything and you won’t go anywhere in life without it.…

With my current career, I was able to advance to a certain point without a college education and was very satisfied with my advancement. However, as time has passed, I have come to see firsthand the value in post-secondary education. Right now I work with Auto-CAD drafting for engineering schematics, and the average draftsman will top out at $55K per year.1 I have personally praised college education within my work organization and promoted the awareness of the earnings and advancement potential for them. Many in our organization are now seeking opportunities to continue their education. But most scholars today are blind and don't see the obvious purpose for this type of education, most students in their high school years waste their time not caring whether they've done their class work for the day or not, they've rather socialize in the hallways with others students just like them. I'll give you a certain point in my life where I asked my parents about education and why is it important. They gave me a simple response and told me “it's the key to every unlocked door you could have ever imagined of and with that key holds the power of your education to be able to open that door.” It’s back when my parents were younger that you had to actually pay for a proper education, not many people where they lived had…
