If You Can Have Dinner with Any 3 People
There has been a time when I have always wondered what it would be like to have dinner with people who inspire me. I have thought long and hard about 3 people who give me motivation to be all I can be. Growing up as a Latina woman in NYC has made me want to be a successful woman. I want to see the world and help others in need. I have chosen to have dinner with Rita Moreno a Latina woman from Humacao, Puerto Rico. My Grandparents are from Humacao, a small town about 45 mins from the capital. Humacao is full of land , nature, tall mountains and amazing culture. I also would love for Audrey Hepburn to join us followed by Anita Roddick. These three women are very influential in many ways and I can relate to them. The dinner I have chosen for us will be full of colorful foods. Salads, pastas, cheese, seafood and wine.
Rita Morena loves to dance and I am sure she will be the life of the party. I come from a big Puerto Rican family like Rita also from Humacao and we love to dance, cook and enjoy quality time. We can turn anything small into a festivity. Moreno has a similar background; she grew up very poor and was forced to move to the slums of NYC only to find herself a bit lost. Rita’s mom made a living so that Rita can focus on school and her career. Like most Puerto Rican families from the 50’s and 60’s they work extremely hard to have a better life. Rita went on got an education and pursue her career. She found herself in Show business acting and playing roles as a minority. She landed her famous role as Anita from West side story. The first and only Latina woman in History and one of the few performers to have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony, and was the second Puerto Rican to win an Academy Award. Rita is also involved in the Jacki Robinson Foundation to give children a better schooling system.
Audrey Hepburn is a classic woman of HollyWood who is also an immigrant from Belgium growing up it was not always easy but she came from a middle class

It started with Florence Lawrence as the ‘Biograph Girl’ in the early 1900’s, and bred into the formation of the Universal Studios by one smart producer by the name of Carl Laemmle. The birth of Hollywood had never experienced a joyful transition for editors and actors, who back in the day were treated like hired help by directors. The silent film era was not the commercial enterprise it is today; it was a mere impression of Vaudeville, and studios generated cheap and generic content, while actors remained anonymous and low paid. Florence was one of the popular actresses of the time who helped create a celebrity culture that was infact a farce used by Studios to promote their cinematographic content. And this farce became known in history as the Golden Age of Hollywood.…

Selena was of Mexican descent, but spoke English majorly. She faced criticism for singing primarily in Spanish when she herself did not speak the language. That did not stop her from producing music in both English and Spanish. As well as a strong artist, she is a strong feminist influence to me because she powered through the Tejano music genre, a dominantly male industry. Selena dominated the difficulties of the music industry at such a young age. Selena began singing at the age of 6 until her death at 23. She did not let the large barrier of language come between her and her music.. The love she had for music helped her with her Spanish speaking, and getting her family out of homelessness by performing at fairs and restaurants. Her music and similarity to my situation helped me to be proud of the language I spoke, and the person I am, Hispanic. Her Spanish speaking tracks of “Amor Prohibido” helped me embrace the Spanish language. Her English tracks such as “Dreaming of You” encouraged me to still learn the English language. I would like to spend the day with Selena because she helped me realize that who I am is not someone I should be ashamed of, I am someone I should…

Marilyn Monroe, was she perhaps one of the greatest movie stars of all time? We know Marilyn, but who was she underneath it all? Well to start, her name wasn’t always Marilyn, it was Norma Jeane. Her mother, Gladys Baker, was thought to have slight mental health issues that later progressed and made it clear that she was in fact “insane”. Norma Jeane had a childhood that would shape who she became later in life. Yes, she was a great star, but she was also a completely different person. The person her half sister, Bernice, knew was not the same person that the woman walking down the street knew. Norma Jeane…
