Identity in Bone Black

The story “Bone Black” is narrated by a young female. She was reared in a once seemingly normal, but now dysfunctional family with her brother and sister. The girl tells a summary of a life defining event. Not only was that event life defining for her but ultimately, it was substantial for everyone else as well.
Love and trust was observed and examined and left for each of them to decipher on their own. Not only were love and trust examined but the struggle of comprehending the multitude of feelings they endure and impose upon on one another. As well as, how those impediments shape them into whom they become. Our identity can be defined in many ways. Identity is imbedded in our culture, language, beliefs, morals, and in our biology. It follows the threads in our clothes framing our individual stereotypes. Clothing often represents the “genre” of categories of types of people we fall into, just making it more visible to others as to who we are.   In this instance this family has issues that cannot be put in a category just by the appearance of the teething troubles. They have complications that demand attention and recognition of the problems. Unfortunately that is not the way they address the severity of the matters at hand. Nor do they acknowledge the dispute with poise and rationality. They adherently believe they should brush the tribulations and miseries under the rug like dust. Then they all wait for the result of how the situation changed their ideas and principles, once again transforming their identity.
It seems that they all have questions about their identity. The father is questioning his role as a provider, wondering if all of the sacrifices he has made have been pointless. The mother was trying to maintain her strength and integrity, while getting battered in front of her children. That type of cruelty can alter anyone’s sense of self-worth.
