This essay is going to compere two songs to determine if they have same theme, but different ways of expressing it. It will make you understand the songs better. The songs that were picked are “Knee Deep” by the Zac Brown Band, and “Life Is A Highway” by Rascal Flatts. These songs came to my mind because they are two of my favorite songs. “Knee Deep” is about escaping, the author broke up with his girlfriend and he’s trying to get her off his mind. He bought a boat and sailed away to his favorite beach thinking no one is going to miss him. The ocean and the drinks were the only way for his stress to go away. He never wants to leave the beach, but one way or another, he has to face reality once again. He completely forgot what made him stressed out because he was having too much fun. Knee Deep means no matter how stressed you are you can always find a place that you can forget about everything. This song is talking about getting rid of emotional stress. He can’t stay drunk forever or run away permanently from his worries. “Life Is A Highway” means that life is always moving forward and never stops even on its hardest days. Life is a journey and sometimes it will lead you in the wrong direction. When you experience stress or unhappiness you can always drive away to an ocean with a friend to forget about everything that happened. Life isn’t as easy as you might expect, sometimes the day doesn’t go how you planed it. You have to push through everything that life throws at you. The singer drives to a beach where he won’t hesitate anymore. Life is sort so, live like you mean it. “Life Is A Highway” and “Knee Deep” are both metaphors. Both songs talk about escaping to a beach so the person can forget about their stress in their life. In “Knee Deep” he’s escaping to a beach

    Though there are many differences between the song and the poem, the theme and SOAPSTone elements are similar in a lot of ways. In the song, Tyler is explaining his experience with depression. By him saying “he lost his car radio” , he’s talking about the music that helps him through the rough times. He has lost his outlet and now is left alone with his thoughts. Similarly, the poem is about a lonely guy who is also experiencing depression.     “I’m out here a thousand miles from my home” is the opening line of the poem, and sets a picture for the reader. In the use of imagery, it depicts the idea of Bob Dylan being in a new place, as well as leading the reader to make the inference that he is having new experiences. Furthermore, as home is normally depicted as a safe, “comfort zone”, by writing that he’s “a thousand miles from [his] home,” the picture is given that he’s bursting out of his usual boundaries. This line flows into the next one, “Walkin’ a road other men have gone down.” This line gives the impression of “road” being a figurative term, Dylan expressing the fact that other people have gone under this journey of self-realisation. This line is connected to the 17th and 18th, which read, “I’m a-leaving’ tomorrow, but I could leave today,” and “Somewhere down the road someday.” This is a form of parallel, as Dylan first touches on the idea that he on the idea of a metaphorical road, or journey, for him to be embarking on, but ends the poem with the reintroduction of the term, this time speaking of the continuation of his journey, giving the impression that experience and self-realisation are a never-ending question. The third line in the poem says, “I’m seein’ your world of people and things,” where which the reader is given the first clue, save from the title, that the poem is written to another person. Upon reading the entire poem, we are told that the poem is for Woody Guthrie, and in the context of the third line, we can piece together than the quest Dylan is embarking on is one that Guthrie had also been on, many years before.
