INTRODUCTION

This section gives an overview of IBM’s origins dating back to the 1880’s, the influential people that molded IBM into what it is today, and the revolutionary machines that have kept IBM in a leading position in the technological industry.

ORIGIN

IBM has led the computing industry for over a century, constantly on the cutting edge of technology and making the world more efficient. Although it was incorporated in 1911 as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company, IBM’s history dates back to the 1880’s, as the company’s forerunners invented the machines that brought C-T-R together.

In 1885, Julius Pitrap invented the very first computing scale. Five years later, Pitrap sold the patent to his scale to Edward Canby and Orange Ozias, who then incorporated The Computing Scale Company in 1891. Their first product line included bacon slicers, meat choppers, coffee mills, and retail scales. In 1895, they introduced the first automatic computing scale. The Computing Scale Company of America is incorporated in 1901 after the merge of the three main scale companies, including The Computing Scale Company, Dayton Moneyweight Scale Company, and Detroit Automatic Scale Company. The Computing Scale Company of America is the first company in the merge to form C-T-R.
