Struggle for Dignity:
A Study of the Struggle for Human Dignity as experienced by those in A Chronicle of a Death Foretold and One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich.

In the novels Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Alexander Solzhenitsyn the fight for honor and human dignity is laid out strongly amongst the ink filled pages. In any society, honor and dignity is a vital part of everyday life for a man. Chapters roll on about the fight that these characters put forth in order to regain or retain their honor that is given to all humans at birth. The climaxes peak with people who are against these dignity seeking men. As seen in these novels everything that is known by these poor souls is questioned by the very act of emasculating the men.
The novel Chronicle of a Death Foretold written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a story of intense passion felt by twin brothers, Pedro Vicario and Pablo Vicario, towards their honor. The brothers learn of a horrible rumor involving their sister Angela Vicario. When the Vicario brothers learn of the unlawful taking of their sister’s virginity they make a verbal vow to kill the man who did this, Santiago Nasar. “Insert Quote.”
The taking of Angela Vicario’s virginity by Santiago Nasar questions the honor of the entire Vicario family. Bayardo Roman which is Angela’s husband will not keep her since she is not marriageable amongst the standards of their society. “QUOTE” Not only in this instant is the Vicario family disgraced at the new knowledge of the taking of Angela’s innocence but it also questions the honor of Bayardo Roman.
Once the Vicario’s family honor is disgraced the twin brothers set out to regain this broken dignity shredded by Santiago Nasar. The quest for family honor and human dignity is a quest worth going on to these brothers. To the people in the society that the...
