Mathematics Higher Level Type II: Portfolio Assignment
Designing a freight elevator:
----------------------------------------------------Introduction----------------------------------------------------------
For this Maths portfolio, I will be recreating a model for an elevator which is used to raise and lower the equipments and minerals in a mine shaft by identifying the problems for the given model of an elevator and by solving those identified problems. Therefore, I will be examining the movement, the displacement, and velocity and the acceleration of the elevator by finding the relationships between them. By this, I will resolve the weaknesses of the elevator and improve on those weaknesses to become strengths. There will be a lot of methods in resolving the flaws and some of them might not work. Thus, my aim for this portfolio is to create an elevator which can maximize in the utility and the benefits in loading down the minerals. My aim is to keep on trying until I get the formula I want and which I’m satisfied with.
The given formula y=2.5t3-15t2 is plotted on a graph as shown below.
Figure 1 Displacement Graph
This is the displacement graph for the given equation y=2.5t3-15t2, where the x-axis shows the time and the y-axis shows the position of the elevator under ground level. The symbols on the axis will be continuously be used throughout the investigation thus, it is better to know that in the graphs, y= the displacement of the elevator, v= velocity of the elevator, a= acceleration of the elevator and last but not least, t= the time.
Figure 2 Diagram Of The Mineshaft
This figure shows the structure of the mineshaft which is 100m in dept and an elevator which goes down and up the mineshaft carrying heavy loads and minerals.
Now I have fully specified what the letters for the axis means and that how the mineshaft looks like underground. Thus, I will now move on to the first question.... [continues]
