As technology continues to grow across the world, they are becoming more involved in the social and academic lives of students. Predominantly, the iPod has been hailed the most popular form of technology today. An iPod is a portable device that people use to store and play audio and video files. Students can use iPods to listen to, or view online videos or pod casts (Lacina, 2008). With the expansion of iPods in the academic environment, teachers of English Language Learners (ELL) or English as a Second Language (ESL) and foreign languages can use iPods in a manner that may improve academic language achievement (Lacina, 2008).
The hypothesis described in the article is that teachers and instructors or English can use iPod technology in the classroom, and the technology may help improve academic language achievement. Many schools have resorted to banning such technologies because teachers fear that introducing this sort of technology in the classroom will only influence students to cheat. Other schools have accepted this hypothesis with Duke University at the forefront by establishing methods for the use of iPods in improving learning and instruction (Lacina, 2008). These schools support the hypothesis because of the numerous benefits that the iPod can bring in to the classroom (Lacina, 2008). The iPod provides greater expediency for storing and access to digital content and greater student commitment and interest in class deliberations (Lacina, 2008). In the foreign language classes at Duke, students say that the use iPods helps them to respond to oral quizzes, audio documentation, and receiving verbal feedback from their instructors (Lacina, 2008). Elementary and middle schools have also recognized the benefits of the iPod and are also beginning to incorporate them in their programs.
