Hurricanes A hurricane is a type of cyclone. A hurricane is an organized collection of thunderstorms that pumps in the air near the earth’s surface and exhaust it out to the top. Hurricanes are tropical storms that are formed in the southern Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and eastern Pacific Ocean. Hurricanes gather heat and energy through the contact with the warm ocean waters. The power of the hurricane can increase by the evaporation from the seawater. Hurricanes rotate counter clock wise. Hurricanes have winds at the minimum of 74 mph. when hurricanes come onto a piece` of land the heavy rain, strong winds, and heavy waves can damage buildings trees and cars and other things. Heavy waves are called a storm surge. Storm surges are very dangerous and that’s why you must stay away from the ocean when a hurricane happens or when there is a hurricane warning. That’s a hurricane. Now you may wonder how a hurricane works. A hurricane has 4 steps. The first thing is that wind near the ocean surface spirals counter clock wise as they bring humid air into the storm from all directions. Next, the humid air causes moisture in it to condense keeping the thunderstorm going. Afterwards, air blows out of the storm from high clouds that can spread hundred of miles. After everything else happens the storms strengthen some rising air begins sinking in the middle forming a cloud free called “eye.” Those are the steps on how a hurricane is formed. There are strong and not so strong hurricanes. The strongest hurricane was Linda. Linda occurred in the Eastern pacific at 88mb and 185mph. Linda was in the category 5 the strongest. Currently the weakest hurricane was Gustav because he came and went with no disasters happening. For a destructive storm you will need to be protected. To be protected you’ll need hurricane straps. Install the hurricane straps so the roof would stay attach to the walls. You'll also need to use storm shutters to protect windows and glass. Use them when severe weather is coming. The storm shutters protect against flying debris like tree trunks or other things carried by strong winds. Things you need for a hurricane are as followed. For Atlantic Ocean hurricanes, the names may be French, Spanish or English, since these are the major languages bordering the Atlantic Ocean where the storm occurs. One name for each letter of the alphabet is selected, except for Q, U and Z. The World Meteorological Organization uses six lists in rotation. The same lists are reused every six years. The only time a new name is added is if a hurricane is very deadly or costly. Then the name is retired and can no longer be used. Names used in the 2007 were Andrea, Barry, Chantal, Erin, Felix, Gabrielle, Humberto, Ingrid, Jerry, Karen, Lorenzo, Mellissa, Noel, Olga, Pablo, Rebekah, Sebastian, Tanya, Van, and Wendy. I bet you are asking yourself how you can tell if a hurricane is going to occur.
