Answer each question below. Answers should be approximately 100 words per question.
1. What are the different forms of social media that exist today? Provide examples of different social media and their primary purposes.
There are many different forms of social media, but I will give a few examples. Magazines, such as People and Time, provide us with social news and relevant issues for society as a whole. ‘Chat’ - which can be video, audio, or textual – is a popular form of social contact. Podcasts, which are generally audio or video files for download, can be found in businesses and entertainment. Newspapers from all over the world can be found both online and in print, and provide us with current events. Virtual gaming is interactive role-playing, where people can pretend to be someone or something else in real time with others from all over the world.
2. What are the greatest benefits of social media for individuals and society?
Social media is a great way to stay in contact with people that you might otherwise not talk to or see photographs of. This is one of the biggest benefits to individuals. Another benefit is being able to meet a wider variety of people. We can make friends with people from anywhere in the world, not just in our own cities. Yet another benefit is staying up to date with current events, sometimes as they happen. For society, social media is a good way for government issues and world news to be given to the people as quickly as possible, as well as reaching as many people as possible.
3. What are the greatest problems of social media for individuals and society?
One problem I see is that people are communicating less in person. We spend so much time interacting online in social media settings that we do not communicate face to face as much as people used to do in our society. Now, it seems that a simple text message or instant message online is acceptable to convey important information. Another problem I see is that we use so many shortcuts in writing that we are having a hard time using proper language skills. I see this as a problem especially with the generation coming up now who do not know days when there was no internet.
4. How have modern social media sites affected commerce? Include positive and negative examples in your answer.
Social media has changed commerce because feedback is available much more quickly than it used to be. Positive feedback entices other consumers to try a new product, and negative feedback may stop some consumers from making a purchase they might otherwise have made. I bought a kitchen item based on positive reviews by other consumers, and I have not been disappointed. I did not buy a tool because other consumers said that it was not a quality product. As you can see, the commerce of these businesses was affected because of feedback left on social media sites.
5. How has the Internet changed the way many Americans consume information? Explain the importance and value of the availability of information on the Internet.
Information is available almost immediately now. Years ago, before the internet was the huge presence it is today, news was much slower to reach American citizens. By the time they learned of world events, the events were in the past. Now, we know about things as they happen, and can even watch video of major world events, in real time. Americans have come to depend on this immediate availability of information. As a whole, we spend a great deal of time watching news reports, videos, and reading news articles. I feel this immediate availability makes us more socially and globally conscious.
6. How might you determine if information found online is trustworthy? Describe credibility issues with information found on the Internet.
When looking at information found online, you need to verify it with other sources before accepting it as truth. The...
