    Reducing teen pregnancy is a huge focus in society and as research suggests, it begins in the home. Parents who are open in communication and who monitor teen behavior closely can make a huge impact on a teen’s decision to initiate sexual behavior. They also instill the idea of preventing pregnancy through the use of abstinence and or contraception; however, if teen lives in an environment that is too strict, there is a possibility for a greater risk of pregnancy brought on through pressure and stress.
    On the other hand, peer pressure can have a great influence on one's decision to engage in sexual activity, and parents often under judge a teen’s capability in spite of the values and morals instilled within the teen. In addition, 50% of parents are not even aware that sexual activity is occurring with their teen and this is where the schools need to step in as a support mechanism through education.
    However, some parents look to the schools to educate their children about sex and its complications regarding pregnancy and even disease, partly because they are uncomfortable about the discussion in the first place. One must realize though that no matter how good of a program a school can create, the school alone can not be the sole supporter. In another view, we have parents, who feel that it is not the schools responsibility to discuss and educate teens about sexual decisions, pregnancy or religion for that matter, so where are we at?
    I think that schools should support educating teens in healthcare and teen pregnancy, but not replace parental involvement. Parents need to effectively communicate with their teens, their expectations and values and be the main role models, whether there are both parents available or only one, as effective communication is essential in providing a safe and healthy teen.
