1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In the recent years, the Human Resources Management area suffered drastic changes which have been responsible for the excellence contribution of intellectual capital that symbolizes, more than anything, the importance of the human factor for the success and sustainability of the organizations. Actually, the main competitive advantage of firms stems from their human capital; employees are the most important asset of any organization. Therefore, it is imperative for companies to concern with the development, motivation and involvement of the employees to ensure their commitment in order to accomplish strategic goals. In this paper we intend to compare the Human Resources practices of two distinctive companies in order to fully comprehend fundamental procedures in a well-structured and successful company, such as recruitment, selection, training and compensation methods.

Thereby, insomuch to this project be dynamic, interactive and beneficial to all the elements involved, we conducted two interviews with the Human Resources Manager of Hovione Macau, Ms. Shirley Tou (Appendix 1); and the Human Resources Manager of Sonae MC – Mr. João Melo (Appendix 2).

2. COMPANY’S INTRODUCTION
2.1. HOVIONE PHARMASCIENCE LIMITED
Hovione is a Portuguese pharmaceutical company dedicated to the process development and manufacture of active pharmaceutical elements (raw materials for the pharmaceutical industry). It is one of the most successful pharmaceutical companies nationally and one of the most prestigious internationally, exporting 100% of its production to highly demanding markets such as the United States, Japan, Europe and Australia. With facilities in Portugal, Macau, Ireland and the United States, Hovione operates according to the strictest international regulations in terms of Safety, Quality and Environment.

Hovione has been in Taipa, Macau since 1984 and now employ 130 people, of which 76% are from Macau.

2.2. SONAE MODELO CONTINENTE
Sonae Modelo Continente (Sonae MC) is a hypermarket chain in Portugal that is a subsidiary of a conglomerate holding company: Sonae Corporation, the largest private employer in Portugal. Sonae MC was the first hypermarket chain in Portugal and continues to be a benchmark in the retail sector. It dedicates to respond to the demands of customers, providing the best products at the best prices and a service that is closer to its customers.

Recently, it has won the prize of the Portuguese most trusted retail brand.
