Introduction.
In this essay I am going to compare and contrast the operational and managerial differences at Semco Engineering and Barking Engineering firms. These differences are quite remarkable and openly exposed through teamwork, organisational structure, and cultures as practiced at the two organisations. The overall performance of both firms has been directly affected by these differences, with the former outclassing the latter, regardless of the fact that both firms are engaged in similar business, serving different markets and operating from different geographical environments.
Comparison of approaches to teamwork and teamworking.
Teams play a central role in the performance of organisations especially in the engineering industry like Semco and Barking Engineering, where work involves designing different components before producing an end product. In order to achieve this, the working environment must be accommodative to workers with different skills and the management and organisation of the teams must be efficient.
It is widely believed that teams mould together the skills, experience and deep understanding of various individuals, and according to Katzenbach and Smith (1993), “teamwork represents a set of values that encourage behaviours such as listening and responding co-operatively to points of views expressed by others, giving the others the benefit of the doubt, providing support to those who need it and recognising the interests and achievements of others” (Katzenbach and Smith: 1993, in Armstrong, M.: 1999 p.152). This kind of working relationship is very well depicted at Semco and has contributed to the happiness of the workers and making their product better. This therefore points to the fact that an ineffective team or one whose performance is hindered by unbearable factors, will hamper the progress of the organisation and will always lack motivation and commitment to the goals of the organisation.
