Desiring a direct link to the customer, HTC added a complimentary business offering mobile operators customized phones based on HTC concepts and designs.
Evaluation:
Vision: HTC‘s vision was to develop a small handheld computer like device. Two key developments enabled that to happen. A product partnership with Microsoft, utilizing Windows CE to develop a small hand-held PC-like device and a business partnership with HT Cho, along with the hiring of Peter Chou, a talented engineer whose team would develop the world’s first handheld PC-like device.
The Break-Through& Growth: In 2000 HTC manufactured a PDA, the iPAQ for Compaq; they were commissioned to be the ODM providing the engineering and design for the product. This was an immediate hit among business professionals and led to HTC becoming profitable in 2000 and going public in 2002. HTC was able to leverage this success to grow the ODM and Mobile Operator businesses and leverage their hardware design and manufacturing strengths to develop a strong partnership with Handspring that provided them the opportunity to learn more about software and UI design. By 2006 the company had reach a crossroads, other ODM competitors were catching up and two of their biggest non-operator customers, actively started searching for lower cost manufacturers. HTC was able to drive the company forward through another partnership, this time with Google, leveraging the Android operation system and also through relentless passion for innovation, driven by the new CEO Peter Chou.
