WEEK TWO
4.8 Expanding you Capacity for Empathy
To expand my capacity for empathy I selected the subject of self-harm in relationship to “cutters”. Initially I could not understanding why someone would want to purposefully cut themselves. After reading a Research Review for Practitioners I realized self-injury is a completed behavior and typically has prominent characteristics of negative emotionality and self-derogation. Self-injury is most often performed to temporarily alleviate intense negative emotions or influence help from others.
From what I read it seems this behavior steams from feelings of limited or no control of a situation and may even be symptom to a more concerning issue. If we don’t have self southing or problem solving life skills I could understand how someone would act out in this way. Now I can relate and have a deeper understanding for cutters and how they express them selves.
4.5 Experiencing Empathy
When I shared my story, I could see the person had great empathy when I could see they were genuinely engaged and actively listening. I felt they could relate or shared a similar experience.
4.4 Clinical Repose
My personal response is typical warm, accepting and genuine. I feel these characteristic are comfortable and come naturally for me. When I am just being myself I feel the need to offer others validation to their thoughts or feelings by saying “that’s good” This may come across as judgmental when my intent is to offer word of encouragement. I’d like to develop the confidence that when my intentions are received they are inline with my true intent. I would like to develop a communication style that is well thought out and intention.
