In an economy that thrives thoroughly on technology and progression itself, there are many companies that have taken advantage of the opportunities that have been offered to them through science. Because of the continuous growth in technology, companies have been able to find ways to further their success by offering competitive products and service. One company, in particular, that has taken full advantage of this feature is Sony. This company alone has had tremendous success because of their strategic ways of thinking and their unbelievable talent in taking advantage of every ounce of new technology that is able to be utilized. But also by taking advantage of online commerce or e-commerce Sony has grown greatly. Sony is a global manufacturer of audio, video, communications and information technology products* for consumer and professional markets. With its music, pictures, game and online businesses, the company is uniquely positioned to be one of the world’s leading digital entertainment brands, offering an outstanding portfolio of exciting multimedia content. *see Appendix A for the list of Sony Products.


“It was in 1946 that Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita together with a small team of passionate and committed group of employees started to build “Tokyo Tsushin Kenkyujo” (Totsuko), or “Tokyo Telecommunications Research Institute”, which has main objective of the company, was to design and create innovative products which would benefit the people” (Sony Incorporation1, 2009). “With the far-sight of expanding worldwide, it was in 1958 that the company formally adopted “Sony Corporation” as its corporate name by combining two words of sonus and sonny; the word sonus in Latin represents words like sound and sonic; the other word sonny means little son. The name Sony is easy to pronounce and read in any language,, which has a lively ring to it, fits comfortably with the spirit of freedom and open-mindedness” (Sony Incorporation 1, 2009).

Japan Sony Corporation (Sony) is the ultimate parent company of the Sony Group. The Company is primarily focused on Electronics, such as audiovisual/ information technology products & components; Game, such as PlayStation; Entertainment, such as motion pictures and music, and Financial Services, such as insurance and banking sectors. It has five segments: Electronics, Games, Pictures, Financial Services and All Other. This makes SONY one of the most comprehensive and diverse entertainment companies in the world. In the Electronics segment, it develops, designs, manufactures and sells various kinds of electronic equipment, instruments and devices for consumer and professional markets. In the Games segment, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., develops, produces, markets and distributes PlayStation Portable (PSP), PlayStation 2 and the PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment systems. In the Entertainment segment, operations encompass motion picture, television and home entertainment production, acquisition and distribution; television broadcasting, and digital content creation. “Sony Corporation of America, based in New York, NY, is a U.S. subsidiary of Sony Corporation, headquarted in Tokyo. Sony’s principal U.S. businesses include Sony Electronics Inc., Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc., Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc., and also Sony BMG Music Entertainment, one of the largest recorded music companies in the world.
