1. The Company

Grameenphone Limited, a joint venture mobile operator in Bangladesh, has launched its operation on March 26,1997 with the purpose of enabling people to batter communicate which ultimately contributes to national development. Telenor Norway, the leading Telecommunications Company of Norway owns 62 % shares of GrameenPhone Ltd, Telenor has substantial international operations in mobile telephony, satellite operations and pay television services, It uses the expertise it has gained in its home and international markets for the development of emerging markets like Bangladesh. Grameenphone Ltd. has been successful in its endeavors and is holding the position of market leader among the mobile operators in the country.

Grameenphone has made its expansion not only in the urban areas, but also it has stretched its network in the rural areas for the economic empowerment of the rural people, One such initiative is through collaboration with Grameen Telecom, which owns 38% of the shares of Grameenphone, Grameen Telecom, a not-for-profit company working In close collaboration with Grameen Bank, the internationally reputed bank for the poor, manages the Village phone Program, through which Grameenphone provides its GSM services to the fast growing rural customers. Additionally, GrameenPhone’s Community Information Center or CIC in short which provides information and cellular services in rural and semi-urban communities; is also a successful program bringing such services to rural areas. Within a short span of time since its inception GP has covered six divisions of the country.
