CAREER COMPROMISES MADE BY WOMEN
AND THE UNDERLYING REASONS

Women have always been portrayed as the backbone of every family, person and even the society. But how many of us are really concerned about the state of women in our society. Here we talk about a 100% literate state, women rising to higher positions in life and they being encouraged to undergo higher education. Yet, are they able to pursue their dreams or do they make compromises in terms of career so that others can live theirs.
Here are a few findings from the study ‘Gender Diversity Benchmark for Asia 2011’ conducted by Community Business Limited, Hong Kong.
India has the lowest national female labour force and the largest leak in the pipeline takes place early on in a woman’s career - from junior to middle level positions. This means the leaking pipeline in India is in fact more severe than in the other geographies as the pool of women is much diminished at an earlier stage. High potential woman are concerned about the personal sacrifices they may be making in terms of possibly foregoing having children for their career and also highlighted the role of their parents in their decision-making.

Some women, particularly those from India, raised the subject of personal sacrifice (in terms of having children) in the quest for career success.

Traditional attitudes are changing across Asia and women want to succeed in the workplace. They are willing to work hard and develop skills and want to be recognised for their contribution.

Taking inspirations from such statements made about women in India, my study is trying to explore reasons that lead to women making compromises in terms of their career. The respondents included in the survey are qualified and married women (completed graduation) falling in the age-group 21 – 40.
