For this assignment I have chosen to analyze the literary theme of Alice Munro’s “ How I Met My Husband”. This is as story that starts off with one plot and theme but ends with another. This was very interesting for me to read because of the surprise ending. I will analyze all aspect of the story which will include theme, tone, as well as the narration style of this short story.

My interoperation of the literary theme would be that you never know the outcome of life and that everything can lead to surprises. If I could sum it up in one word it would be unforeseen. The main character Edie had her heart set on one man who had wooed her so much that she waited and waited for him to no avail. During her waiting for this man she came in contact with a man who happened to be the mailman. He was very smitten with Edie and looked forward to seeing her everyday.

As I stated the story is mainly about Edie’s whirlwind romance with a pilot named Chris. He had come to town to take the residence of the small farm community on plane rides for a fee of $1.00 for adults and $0.50 for children. This became very popular and Edie found herself drawn to Chris. After the romance between them is sparked Chris’s fiancé comes to town. This seems to not sit to well with Chris so he flees town. Before he leaves he tells Edie that he will write. As she waits for word from her sweetheart she meets her future husband but never gives him a second thought until he calls to ask to escort her to the movies. That’s where to theme of unforeseen comes into play. As she is waiting for Chris’s letter she unknowingly meets her future husband. Through out the whole story you think that Chris is her husband hence the name “How I Met My Husband” but in all reality the she ironically meets her husband while waiting on the pilot.

The tone of the story is an ironic tone. You believe...
