HOMEWORK FOR 2 OCTOBER
YOU MAY BEGIN PREPARING THIS NOW, SINCE THERE IS NO HOMEWORK BESIDES TEXTBOOK READING FOR MONDAY 30 SEPTEMBER

FIRST EXAM REVIEW SHEET

In the first few weeks of this course, we have surveyed over 25,000 years of history and prehistory. We have focused on certain elements of culture:

1* Spiritual worldview
2* Expression of this worldview in literature and art
3* Political or social organization

We have studied the following civilizations: [Christianity will NOT be on this exam; it will be on the next exam]

4* Mesopotamia
5* Ancient Egypt
6* Ancient Romans

Our study has been based on both primary and secondary sources.

Primary sources, written during the historical period under consideration, are located on the course Moodle page and in special boxes in the textbook
Secondary sources, interpretations by historians of these civilizations, are found in the textbook chapters and in the lecture material.
In reviewing for this exam, first consider what primary sources you have read. For example, for Mesopotamia you have the following:

1. PowerPoint presentation on Moodle – visual evidence
2. Similar visual evidence in illustrations in textbook
3. Short excerpts in textbook – e.g. p. 12 by anonymous Sumerian scribe
4. Readings posted as homework assignments on Moodle
The secondary sources, once again, are:

1. Lecture material
2. Textbook reading
Go through the primary sources for each of these civilizations and see what material you have. Obviously, if you have done a homework assignment on Gilgamesh, you would be more likely to choose this poem and visual representations of Gilgamesh. If your homework assignment were on the laws of Hammurabi, you would start with this and depictions of cuneiform writing. Then, you would look at the three categories above and decide which one you wished to discuss.

Your discussion would include general information about, for example, political and social
