Though it is a delight to stand before you to deliver a speech, I think it is shameful on our part to let go what we had and reinvent the wheel of saving our planet. God created this earth with all kinds of plants and animals and also placed us here to enjoy its richness. But man’s greed for more comfort and the advanced technology that he has invented has played havoc.
I think everyone here would agree that our planet is pretty much in trouble. Everywhere you look today you will hear or see something reminding you that our planet’s health is failing. If our planet where a person it would be about time to buy the burial plot and write out the last will and testament.
I know this all sounds so depressing - but we can’t get overwhelmed. Every one of us can do something to help slow down and reverse some of the damage. We cannot leave the problem-solving entirely to the experts - we all have a responsibility to our environment.
Here are some ways where we can easily contribute to save our environment. In our home we can conserve energy by turning off the lights, computers and other appliances when not in use even for a short period of time and even minimizing the opening of the microwave door when it is in use. We can reduce toxicity in our house and in the yard by using traps instead of rat and mouse poisons and insect killers. Painting our houses with Lead free paints or covering Leaded painted walls with wall paper would also help. At office / schools we can ensure that we use soy based inks which are less toxic to print important documents, use ceramic mug instead of paper cups and be sure that we discard paper for scrap. How can we keep our air clean? Avoid slow-burning, smoldering fires. They produce the largest amount of pollution. Use solar power for home and water heating.
