For many people, being in a position with power can be very exciting as well as very intimidating without the rightful skills and knowledge, hence a Human Resource Manager may become frustrated and overwhelmed without the proper skills. To become an effective Human resource manager, you need to understand what is needed to do the job with style and tact. This is a very critical role of the company as it holds the heart of great performance and achievement. In today’s fast-paced economy competition is an issue of services and products hence much attention has to be directed to a better service and the best product, and also how this can be achieved through utilising the human resources. HR Mangers have a lot of responsibilities as it basically falls onto their shoulders to make sure that the company functions smoothly and effectively. If the HR Manager of an organization fails to perform his duties effectively, the entire working system of the company is affected badly.

According to Gunningle et al (1997: 10), people are the life blood of every organisation. A company’s workforce represents one of its most potential and valuable resources. To get such a work force, the company owners should pay considerable attention to the hiring phase. DEFINITION OF TERMS

In simple words, HRM means employing people, developing their capacities, utilizing, maintaining and compensating their services in tune with the job and organizational requirement, Guest, (1987). According to Kreitner (1995) management “.. is the process of working with and through others to achieve organisational objectives in changing environments or workplaces in organisations and companies. Central to the process is the effective and efficient use of resources”. Going by this definition, an implied assertion here is that management is a social process as many activities at the workplaces cannot be single handily achieved but are to be done collectively, and one thread that strongly brings several individuals together to achieve common tasks is communication. To be effective according to Mullins (1999: 861) means to do the right things and this is in relation to the output that relates to some specific purposes, objectives or tasks.
