How successful is Katy Perry for your chosen industry?
How successful is Katy Perry for your chosen industry (Music)? Objectively Katy Perry success is indisputable, in terms of financial success Perry has thrived, selling over 11 million albums, her song ‘California Gurls’ selling 4,4 million online downloads and her album ‘Teenage Dream’ generating 5 n1 hit singles. Just these numbers show her global success and market appeal to a whole variation of audiences.
She promotes and markets a variety of other products including pop chips, Sims 3 and adidas, simultaneously promoting herself. The usage of this synergistic relationship creates unique opportunities to reach out to a wider audience. Her global success and appeal to her audience can be objectively seen through her social media success, having over 30 million likes on Facebook and 8 million twitter followers. It offers her fans a wide range of audience pleasures, such as social interaction, escapism, personal identity and surveillance. The idea of knowing details about the star you admire, being able to follow what they do is very gratifying for the audience, giving them a chance to connect with her, claiming her to be a fantastic role model.

Whether Katy’s image is constructed solely to appeal to audience pleasures, making her appear a successful musician and aspiring role model, can be debated. She is signed by Capitol Records, which are a very large and well known recording company. The assumption that Perry is a construction, just another pop artist whose only purpose is to make as much money as possible, would be expected with such a record. However, she herself states ‘I will not be the second anything, I’ll be the first Katy Perry’. For her image she has opted for a bubbly, pink, frivolous type of character in the majority of her products, it being the central image of her entire ‘Teenage Dream/tour’. It could be said that it would definitely appeal to a wide audience, maximizing her chances of success.

Katy Perry is a singer and songwriter of pop-rock music. Katy Perry portrays her love for modern pop-rock music and performance by presenting it in such ways like in Wide Awake. Katy Perry performed a live music performance at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards. The music video kept many of the same features such as the clouds, the shooting star, and the spaceship. Katy Perry’s story in her performance was similar to The Smashing Pumpkin’s music video because in Tonight, Tonight there are two people on an adventure into space and in The Wide Awake performance Katy Perry and a man are together on an adventure as well. However, Katy Perry seems to be in a dream having an adventure. She kept a similar interest about taking an adventure with a significant other and transitioned it in her own art style, which is more of a modern look. There were many of the same set features such as the spaceship, and the shooting star that The Smashing Pumpkins used, and George Melies originally had. The spaceship appears in the beginning of the performance and then the shooting star is towards the middle of the performance and those clearly have a meaning of when the spaceship and the shooting star are placed in the performance. Katy Perry used her performance to represent an adventure with someone, which was echoed from The Smashing Pumpkins. She was able to transcend her art of music into a live performance…
