Did you know that 23 percent of Facebook users check their account 5 or more times daily? Facebook is just one of the many social networks used by people all over the globe. It has become a way to connect with people unlike ever before. Social Media has become such a big part of Society that it is expected of us to use at least one. But how beneficial is social media really? Statistics show that an ordinary person spends an average of 7 hours and 45 minutes on social networks during a period of one month Those hours could have been spent doing something productive such as exercising or reading a book. Time is precious and it should not be wasted on unnecessary activities. Although Social Media sites such as twitter and Facebook may be helpful, but they re far more harmful, because of the arising issue of cyber bullying across the web especially on social media and all the reoccurring cases of mistaken identity that have disrupted let alone ruin the lives of many people.

Cyber bullying is a new form of bullying that involves the use of social networks and other forms of online communication to send mean and harmful messages directed at a certain group or individual. It is an ongoing problem in todays society. “Zita kantus knows all about managing data traces. The school counselor, she is the first point of contact for bullying complaints and 80 percent of those now involve social networking sites, she says.” This excerpt from the article “Generation FB” by Katrin Bennhold shows the increase of cyber bullying and the amount of issues social networks are causing. The reason for this may be is the barrier between the victim and the bully online. The bully is hiding behind a screen and this can make him or her do things that would never be done in person. The shyest person could be the loudest on the internet. Cyber bullying has the name effects on people as bullying one hundred years ago. It can cause low self-esteem, loss of self confidence and depression....
