    In Chirot and McCauley’s book Why Not Kill Them All? the authors cover specific cases of genocide, in addition to providing an unbiased and unemotional approach to the explanations of their causes and effects. From their research, the authors conclude that genocides will continue to arise of any amplitude and unfortunately no reasons for triggering these mass killings seem to be vanishing with any certainty or timeliness. Although many suggestions have been proposed and are continuously arising to help prevent genocides, the authors do not believe any of them hold significant promise in providing a solution. In fact Chirot and McCauley claim that today’s modern world actually appears to be on the verge of more large scale massacres and suggest them to potentially be religion based. In today’s scenario, many of the modernized societies of the world no longer are as susceptible to genocide due to a larger acceptance of the diverse cultures people have. However, in some places where cultures, religions, or ideologies are seen more as right or wrong, these mass killings still hold potential until views are either accepted or the issues are depleted through agreements. Chirot and McCauley make many substantial claims in regards to why the future is poised for more genocides, and also suggest ways of limiting such mass killings. Nevertheless, the authors make some broad claims that simply are not parallel to the realities of societies today, and are not truly applicable to our world.…

    Men and seldom women act in an atrocious crime to kill in a manner that is evil, a disregard to life of the victims and sometimes themselves. Range of events or experiences that took place in the killer’s life, religious beliefs, immoral fantasy, love (Turvey, 2012, p 529), depression, political, observation, revenge (Turvey, 2012), and frustration is a combination that compels the killer to act in this manner. The killer sometimes is influenced by the media or society that they viewed on television or movies for example, Virginia Tech murders the killer sent a package to the media containing self-interviews. Mass killers utilize an array of weapons for instance, Jared Loughner used automatic weapons in Janurary 2011, Jack Gilbert Graham used dynamite on flight 629 in November 1955, Lizzie Borden and Anton Probust used an axe in April 1866, these are just a few of many weapons that are used in mass killings. Turvey (2012) identifies five types of mass killings: power, revenge, loyalty, terror, and profit. Power-oriented mass killer would be a pseudocommando which uses a para-military method with numerous firearms. Campo Elias Delgado was a power-oriented killer who took the lives of twenty-eight people before the Columbia police killed him in December 1986. Revenge-oriented mass killer targets their victims by categories or the general public (Fox and Levin 1998). The revenge-oriented killer was either wronged by their victims or just out of pure hate and jealousy. Ronald Simmons is an example of a revenge-oriented killer who hilled fourteen of his family members on Christmas because of his wife threatening him of divorce. Loyalty-oriented killings are usually the parent kills their spouse and children to save them from grief or hardship. Profit-oriented mass killings such as acts of terrorism motivated by political, religious, or monetary agenda.     The movie that I chose to watch was A Time to Kill staring Samuel L. Jackson and Matthew McConaughey. This film was set in Canton Mississippi, where two white racist viciously beat and rape Carl Hailey’s (Samuel Jacksons) daughter. His daughter survives this and the two men are arrested. Carl seeks out Jake Brigance (Matthew McConaughey) a lawyer who helped defend his brother previously. They discuss a similar case which four white teenagers were acquitted of the rape of a black girl. Carl is determined to not let that happen in this case. Carl Hailey goes to the county courthouse and shoots and kills both rapists. Carl is soon arrested without resistance. Brigance agrees to provide defense for Carl Hailey. During the preliminary hearing they enter a plea of not guilty by reason of temporary insanity. Throughout the trial there are numerous threats and attempts to end Jake’s life by the KKK who resurrected because of this trial. During the closing arguments Brigance tells the jury to close their eyes while he describes in detail, the rape of a young 10-year-old girl. Mirroring the story of Carl Hailey daughter’s rape, he then asks the jury in his final comment to "now imagine she's white." This implied that Hailey would not have been called to question before the court of law had the victim been white. Had it been so, it is that the father's motive in murdering the rapists would have been seen by the public as justified, and there would not have been any prosecution. After deliberation a verdict of not guilty comes back and Carl is acquitted of all charges.…
