HOW MALAYSIA GOT ITS INDEPENDENCE
31th August 1957 has been marked as Malaysia’s day of independence from the grips of British colonization for 172 years. Independence Day is an annual celebration to witness the anniversary of a nation’s independent statehood. Apparently, the way Malaysia got its independence is different from others countries. The independence of Malaysia was peacefully attained by holding talks with the British.
Second world war ended in 1945 and the Japanese surrended. It gave the opportunity to Malaya Communist Party(MCP) to take over the government in Malaysia 14days, before the return of British. However,British returned to Malaya in September because the member of MCP caused troubles.British Military Administration (BMA) was set up but it did not last. So,British Parliament proposed Malayan Union on 10 October 1945.Its purposes were protecting the economic interests of British and for Malaya to get independence from British. The formation of Malayan Union was greatly opposed by Malays. They used mass media such as the newspaper Majlis and Utusan Melayu to voiced their opposition. On 11th May 1946,UMNO was formed to oppose Malayan Union and Dato’ Onn bin Jaafar was the 1st president.A conflict then occurred.Dato’ Onn Jaafar allowed non-Malays to join the party because he believed that inter-racial nation was important to get independence.Due to the opposition of his party members towards his belief,he choosed to left the party and Tunku Abdul Rahman replaced him. Malayan Union had finally failed as a result of the opposition from the local people.A few others factors also led to failure of Malayan Union. The set up of Malayan Union was said in wrong timing. The communal feelings during Japan Occupation still existed in Malays and Chinese. Moreover, the set up of Malayan Union boost the sense of nationalism among Malays. The non-Malays did not support Malayan Union because Singapore was excluded.
The Federation of Malaya was formed on 1 February 1948

Due to her fame, Kedah was subjugated by Srivijaya in the 7th century. Until the 15th century, Kedah came under the influence and rule of the Siamese kingdom. Kedah’s position was further jeopardised with the pressure from the Bugis, Siamese and the Burmese in the 18th century. There were many power struggles during that period until the early 20th century; the British conquered most of the Malay Peninsula. Finally in 31 August 1957, Malaya achieved independence. With such rich historical background, Kedah has developed into a state where not only her culture is invested in the people but also in the houses.…

The Prime Minister of the Federation of Malaya, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra in his speech at the Conference of Foreign Journalists' Association of Southeast Asia held at the Adelphi Hotel, Singapore on 27 May 1961, had an insight about the need to establish a plan to bring the Federation of Malaya, Singapore, North Borneo, Brunei and Sarawak into a form of political and economic cooperation. Among other things, this cooperation should be conducted with the aims of limiting the influence of communist influence that could jeopardise the political stability within the region. The Government's stand is based on the political developments in Singapore that shows an increasing influence of the Leftist. In addition to that, the idea is to offset the total population, increasing the economic development and to accelerate the process of the independence for Singapore, Brunei, North Borneo and Sarawak.…

Constitution: The Constitution came into force on 27 August 1957 but formal independence was only achieved on 31 August.[8] This constitution was amended in 1963 to admit Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore as additional member states of the Federation and to make the agreed changes to the constitution that were set out in the Malaysia Agreement, which included changing the name of the Federation to "Malaysia". Thus, legally speaking, the establishment of Malaysia did not create a new nation as such but was simply the addition of new member states to the Federation created by the 1957 constitution, with a change of name.[9]…

Communism as an ideology was first introduced to Malaya by Chinese anarchists, and not by Kuomintang Left, Indonesian communists or Chinese communists as claimed in existing scholarship. A handful of Chinese anarchists arrived in British Malaya during the First World War to take up positions as Chinese vernacular school teachers or journalists. These Chinese intellectuals harboured not only anarchism but also communism, commonly known then as anarchy-communism.…

In 1945, the Japanese surrendered and the Second World War ended. The period between the Japanese surrender and the return of the British to Malaya gave the Malayan Communist Party (MCP) the opportunity to take over the government in Malaya. History shows that the MCP got to control Malaya for 14 days. During that time and from time to time thereafter its members created trouble and chaos. Later, the British returned to Malaya in September 1945. To restore peace, the British Military Administration (BMA) was established. In the chaos military rule was felt necessary. The military system of administration did not last and in its wake the British proposed a new system of administration known as Malayan Union. In January 1946, the Constitution of the Malayan Union was passed and on 1 April 1946 the Malayan Union was officially proclaimed, with Edward Gent as the first Governor.
