How Leaders Are Made.

Leadership is defined as “the process in which an individual influences the group of individuals to attain a common goal.” A leader may possess many qualities. They not only stand for their own cause, they take responsibility and motivate others. A great leader should possess many attributes including honesty, ability to delegate, communication, confidence, creativity, the ability to inspire, a vision, and most importantly, a positive attitude. John Quincy Adams said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” To be successful, a leader must showcase many skills. As Ralph Waldo Emerson stated, “Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” This type of inventiveness is an important quality to have, as those who are considered great leaders, such as Martin Luther King Jr. or Steve Jobs, had a vision and took that vision somewhere. Among others, a great leader must also possess skills such as the ability to make decisions, use critical thinking and problem solving (as one must know how to deal properly with issues that may arise), manage change, plan strategically, build relationships, and retain excellent communication skills, as communication is an important key to success. A leader must assertively work towards a goal, but they should never become overly aggressive for it. Continuous self-study of oneself, further training, learning, evaluation, and imbibing positive things in life are great tools to develop the characteristics needed to become an excellent leader. Perhaps one of the greatest leaders of our generation that embodies these skills is Steve Jobs. Apple is a powerful brand in the retail world, and Steve Jobs molded his dream into a reality.
