How Does John Steinbeck present loneliness and isolation in the novel?
Of Mice and Men, published by John Steinbeck in 1937, is set in the Salinas Valley of California during the Great Depression. The Great Depression was an economic crisis and period of low business activity in the U.S. and other countries, roughly beginning with the stock-market crash in October 1929, and continuing through most of the 1930s.
In this essay I will be studying the character Crooks and how he is isolated from the rest of the people on the ranch.
Crooks was a lively, sharp-witted, black stable-hand, who takes his name from his crooked back. Like most of the characters in the story, he admits that he is extremely lonely, this is shown when he said “A guy needs someone –to be near him”. He said this because in the 1930’s black people were extremely low in the social hierarchy and have virtually had no rights which meant that no one wanted to be with him which makes him lonely and isolated.
We are first introduced to Crooks on page 21. Candy was showing George and Lennie around the ranch and was telling them that the boss gave “the stable buck hell” George didn’t understand why until Candy said “the stable buck’s a nigger.” It seemed to make sense to George why the stable buck had been given “hell”, it was because he was black and if anything annoyed you back then you would just take it out on a black person and that would be the normal thing to do, this makes him isolated.
However Crooks not only finds himself isolated by the men on the ranch, but he also isolates himself. This is most evident on page 67-68 when he said “you have no rights to come in my room. This here is my room. Nobody got any rights in here but me.” Crooks didn’t want anyone in his room, and I think this is because his room is the only place that he knows he won’t be treated differently. It’s the only place he can get away from all of the racial abuse and feel safe in. However by Lennie coming in he feels
