Family values should be instilled in young
BY YEE XIANG YUN

JOHOR BARU: The importance of family value and unity in a family are qualities that should be instilled in the younger generation, said Tourism, Domestic Trade and Consumerism exco Datuk Tee Siew Kiong.

He said that in the age of globalisation and where Western culture tends to influence youngsters nowadays, parents and educators are to realise the importance of traditional culture and family values to be passed down to their children.

“I remember when I was young, it was a must for the whole family to wait until the eldest family member, which was my grandfather, to return home before we can all sit down and have our dinner,” he said.

He said that although it was a small gesture, it taught him and his siblings the importance of respecting elders and the importance of family unity.

Tee said that when attending the third anniversary of the Skudai Cultural Association charity sale and fundraising drive at Jalan Kebudayaan 9 in Taman Universiti here.

He said that a lot of parents nowadays are caught up in their work and the rat race, which makes it hard for them to spend quality time and properly teach these values to their children.

“However, it does not only depend on parents, the society as a whole, community leaders and educators have a role to play in imparting such values to them at a young age,” he said.

Tee commended the association for offering courses where such values are taught to young children so that such traditional values do not get forgotten with time.

During the event Tee, who is also state MCA deputy chairman, also allocated RM5,000 to the association.

As old generations have died away new generations have poked their way into the world. As man evolves with new generations so do their lifestyles. A few decades ago children would ask their parents for the necessities they need and be okay with what they had. Now it’s backwards. More and more kids are demanding to have the latest technologies and the latest gadgets rather than being comfortable with the resources and materials their parents provide. Children are taking control rather than their parents taking control. Children are becoming the parents and the parents are becoming the children. The parents are doing what their children want them to do and…

Leppien-Christensen, in Rebeca Clay’s “Everyday heroes” article explains the importance of teaching his son a lesson: “’I really wanted my son to see that it’s a social obligation to intervene when we can’” (Clay 5). This fortunate young boy’s father began teaching his son, heroic qualities from a young age in order to instill in him the power to change the world. If he had simply ignored the biker, his son would have been falsely under the impression he should not bother himself to check on someone hurt on the side of the road. No matter the age of a child, the lesson of what is right and wrong should always be taught. The philosophy teacher, Scott LaBarge, believes that, “it is our job to tell the stories. Tell your students what a difference people of courage and nobility and genius have made to the world” (LaBarge 9). Without valuable lessons of genuine behavior, the world would be consumed with many horrible, inconsiderate people lacking a higher moral code. The value of learning to be a selfless and caring person should be as important and easy as learning basic life skills. However, mankind often fails to teach their children to stand up, resulting in citizens who remain hushed in difficult…

Parents learn how to parent from their own parents. Each generation socializes children on what is expected in the home, how to behave in public, and how to treat other people. They show by example how valued the child is as he goes through his developmental stages and the crises of life. Not all parents are equipped with the knowledge of how a child develop. (Scholz 5)…
