Question 1.1 Critically assess theories of internationalisation in relation to internet companies such as Facebook?
Now, more and more people use social media to connect with their friends and family. Facebook could be the most popular one used by many people from all over the world. Up until 2013, Facebook got up to 1.06 billion monthly active users and 680 million mobile users (Smith, 2013). In terms of internationalization, Facebook successfully launched to the whole world and nowadays, almost all the countries are using Facebook even some poorer country from Africa (Facebook Statistics by Countries, 2013). The company successfully launched to almost all countries because it puts a lot of attention to the differences between each country has so it has succeed in terms of internationalization.
First, new features could attract more people to join Facebook since the website is used by people from all over the world and this gives the company opportunity to have the free advertisement from one place to another. For example, in the year of 2013, Facebook just introduces a free call application for their the United States iPhone users and this could attract more people to join Facebook and get them connected to the rest of the world (Hamburger, 2013). From here, we might think this is good only for attracting more users from the United States, but it could attract more people from the rest of the world. Suppose, one person from the United States never had a Facebook before and he now know this free call feature of Facebook and find it is quite a fun stuff to use. This might lead him to talk to his friends from Indonesia who never had a Facebook account neither so his Indonesia friends might create their Facebook account since the person from the United States told them to do so and they might find it fun later. Therefore, every time, when Facebook introduces a new feature, it would attract more people to join and give more incentive for its users to use more often. This could happened to people from all over the world.
Second, the biggest feature of the company is that it is very international. According to the website itself, Facebook now has over 70 languages and this is the most important factors for the company to success internationally because this would allow people to use their own languages to communicate with their friends and to use the website. Moreover, it is very convenience for those who have foreign friends and want to have connection with their friends all the time but still use their own language to use the websites and its features. The website also has some translation applications for its users to download and use, such as Translations admin panel, which allows users to translate one language into another. This would give users an opportunity to see what happened to the outside the world even they do not know the languages. Facebook is a place that all the people from all over the world have their free speech. If one person who want to know one articles repost by his friends but the article is written in French, he could use Facebook’s translation application to get a general idea about what is about of the article. Sometimes, people would think this is a product from America so they need to know English in order to use it but now this kind of feature allows more people to join Facebook since it eliminates the language problem of using the Facebook.
Third, the target group of Facebook is university students and this allows almost every university from the world to join. The CEO of Facebook launched Facebook in his Harvard dorm room and this site is first mostly used by college students. Since every part of the world has universities and the number of educated people are increasing. This means more and more people would join and Facebook would become more and more internationally since it targets to college students. Also, because of the internationalization feature, it is a...
