Alvin Schmidt set out to show what an influential influence Christianity has had on the world. Christianity has contributed a lot to people, over two thousand plus years ago. Christians beliefs often, almost always, clashed with those of the Greco-Romans. In the first chapter he shows and gives us proof that people were transformed by Jesus Christ. He began with his twelve disciples who were all just ordinary men, from a fisherman to a tax collector who cheated people out of their money. Each of their characteristics was different. They were cocky, attention-seeking, doubtful, and penny-pinchers. These same men were transformed into followers of Jesus Christ. This caused them to proclaim the message and preach the Gospel without being ashamed. They became martyrs in the time of persecution or people who were killed because of their religious beliefs. Many of the first martyrs were Jesus’ hand picked disciples including countless other self proclaimed Christians. They would not bow down or reference the idol gods and refused to participate in the dishonest lifestyle of the Greco-Romans which resulted in their deaths. The persecution of Christians came at the hands of Roman authorities such as Nero, Domitian, Antonius Pius, Marcus Aurelius, and Valerian. Jesus had told them that following Him would not be an easy or pain-free life. He knew that they would be hated and despised for simply believing in Him. They tried to live their lives according to the words of Jesus Christ: “Let your light shine before men that they may see your good...
