How can teachers / trainers establish ground rules with their learners?
My learners come from different backgrounds, work environments, cultures and beliefs which is a challenge for the Trainer / Assessor. Therefore, I have to try to differentiate my learner in regard to establish appropriate ground rules when I train them. First of all the rules needs to be adhered to the companies operations / disciplinary procedures of where I am operating in at the time and then to be adapted to the learners' needs and backgrounds.
Different ways would apply when I establish the ground rules of a group for example if I was running a Numeracy workshop, than if I was operating on a one to one basis. The main method I would use for both groups is by preparing a list of what I would expect from my learners and what they would expect from me.
I strongly believe that dictatorial attitude for setting boundaries should not be adopted by an Assessor / teacher as I feel that will just cause resentment from the learners. The techniques I use to establish ground rules are based on mutual agreement, discussions, reflecting each learner’s opinion and negotiating. Also having a common sense approach to what we are trying to achieve is also key to gaining this mutual agreement.
By encouraging learners to take part in making the rules, I easily achieve full acceptance of fair ground rules such as: keeping the mobiles off during the sessions; listening carefully and not interrupting the others; arriving on time; respecting the other fellow learners. I also have to take into consideration their own job role and ensure that whilst meeting the overall objectives of the session, that this can also be embedded into their job role as my learners are usually work based and not full time students.
