The topic of global warming is of much controversy, as many scientist argue whether or not it is a real phenomenon, or if it is human induced or naturally occurring in our environment. However we can clearly see that there are many changes in our climate as we are been affected by higher temperatures and other adverse weather conditions, which all point fingers to the theory of global warming. The aim of this research paper, is to provide information to the uneducated masses, about the factors that contribute to global warming, identify the effects of global warming, and show how global warming has changed over the past 50 years and to illustrate how human activities have contributed to global warming, while providing recommendations to minimize its effects.
Since its conception, global warming has been one of the most controversial topics debated among many scientist and politicians. For the past twenty (20) years, the controversy surrounding the issue is whether or not we as humans have in fact created the proposed phenomena, or if we have acted as catalyst and increased the occurrence of the process all together. A few individuals, like Habibullo Abdussamatov a climate researcher, however deny the fact completely that global warming is actually occurring in the environment. Many arguments are being constantly raise by global warming, such as: Does global warming exist? Are humans to be blamed for the phenomena? Or is it just a natural cycle that occurs in nature? With all the debates and questions, the uneducated masses would wonder, what is global warming? According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, global warming is defined as an increase in the earth's atmospheric and oceanic temperatures widely predicted to occur due to an increase in the greenhouse effect resulting especially from pollution. So is this phenomena real? Roach 2010 “evidence suggesting global warming is overrides any arguments against this theory. In our planet, our "global temperature record shows an average warming of about 1.3°F over the past century”, which indicates that it is actually an occurring process. As the definition of global warming states, it occurs to due to an increase in greenhouse effect, especially from pollution. Pollution is often cause by human activities which indicates that human activities does contribute to global warming. Global warming is believed to be a long term and ongoing process, which impacts the earth. "Observational data indicate that over the past century, the snow caps have decreased globally. From 1966 to 2005, the satellite-observed snow cap of the Northern Hemisphere decreased each month except in November and December.” (Fang et al 2011). So we now know that global warming is an actual long term process and it is impacted by human activities which leads to my question, how have human activities been the primary sources contributing to global warming that has occurred over the past 50 years?
Factors that contribute to global warming
Climate change has been attributed to both human and naturally occurring activities. Naturally occurring activities that have been linked to global warming include volcanic eruptions, variation in the earth’s orbit around the sun and variations in solar output (Beherandt 2007). Whereas the emissions from industrial plants, urbanization, deforestation and consumption of fossil fuels are seen as the major contributions from the human aspect of global warming (Fang et al. 2011). The major factor that scientist say supports the theory is that global warming is indeed happening because of the greenhouse gas effect. To prove that global warming does exist scientist have identified the effects of rising in temperatures. “A group of 3,146 earth scientists surveyed around the world overwhelmingly agree that in the past 200-plus years, mean global temperatures have been rising, and that human activity is a significant...
