Esperanza aspires to be like the children who are forced to stay at school for lunch without considering that it is because they have no other options. This is because she focuses more on what others have than what she has and often wishes to be like others even when what she has is better. This becomes more evident in chapter nineteen of Sandra Cisneros’ novel, The House On Mango Street, tittled “A Rice Sandwich.” In this chapter the grass is definitely greener on the other side of the fence: Esperanza wishes to be like the kids who “get to eat in the canteen” (43) instead of going home for lunch where she can get better food and see her family.…

Frongoch Interment Camp was situated in Frongoch in Merionethshire, Wales. It was a makeshift place of imprisonment during World War 1. It housed German prisoners of war in an abandoned distillery and crude huts up until 1916, but in the wake of the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin, Ireland, the German prisoners were moved and it was used as a place of internment for approximately 1,800 Irish. Notable prisoners included Michael Collins and Arthur Griffith. They were accorded the status of prisoners of war. The camp became a ground for the spreading of the revolutionary gospel. The camp became known as ollscoil na réabhlóide[2], the "University of Revolution" or sometimes "Sinn Féin University". The camp was emptied in December 1916 when David Lloyd George replaced Asquith as Prime Minister.…

With the intention of understanding how Filipinos lived during the Spanish colonial era, we took a class trip to Casa Manila, a reconstructed Spanish colonial mansion of the mid-1800s, having in mind that we would get to see or have a preview of how the architecture was during the Spanish colonial period. Through taking a glimpse into a reconstructed replica of an original Spanish period house, we thought that the structure would enlighten us as to what the living conditions were like during the era. However, the edifice was not confine into presenting artifacts and materials classed only under the Spanish colonial period but it displayed diverse furnishings and artworks that range from the 17th to the early 20th century.
