Taking the Plunge: New Luxury Ventures Saras Sarasvathy, 2009, University of Virginia Darden School Foundation

Thomas Blanc (UIN: 124006650)

If you were David, what would you do and why?

I can’t deny David’s got several characteristics of an entrepreneur: he has determination, opportunity obsession, creativity. He has the ability to identify and take advantage of a succession of opportunities in its environment: by reading the book “Trading up” he identified a demand for new luxury goods; by talking with the hygienist, he decided to focus on pet food industry; thanks to its market research and attention to pet shops environment, he pinpointed the new “out-of-home” dog-related product category, and finally by watching a dog drinking in a park he decided to launch portable drinking water product for dogs. The “Pup Cups” product is the main strength of David’s new venture: it is a totally new product, first in the new “out-of-home” category. However there are several reasons why David is so nervous taking the plundge. Firstly due to weaknesses in his Business Model: it has only one product line, no infrastructure and no distribution channel. Secondly, there are threats in the business environment, such as big players in the dog food industry likely to launch a product before him.
The previous SWOT analysis emphasizes a lack of resources and capabilities, essential to start the new venture. Moreover, we need to take into account personal factors: David has grown up since the opportunity he had to launch a new venture after completing its MBA. He now has a good CV, a brilliant career of consulting: resigning would imply a loss of comfort for instability and risks. Once one is involved in the career development process of companies, it’s hard to stop it.

Thereby many factors suggest David shouldn’t give a call to his boss. However, despites every risks, I would encourage him to make it. He inherited the entrepreneurial spirit from his father and launching his new

Sales of dog food will total about $14 billion in 2011 at manufactures’ prices. There is a huge market and growth opportunity that they are missing out on. They need to make the public aware of the Breeder’s Mix brand name, what the packaging looks like, and the fact that Breeder’s Mix is a high-quality dog food. As well as direct dog owners to shop for dog food in the frozen-food section of supermarkets. They will have to overcome some key challenges such as overcoming potential objections to frozen dog food, lack of appeal of frozen food, pricing, and introducing a new food to a new market for their company.…

Responding to the philosophical dilemma of the Euthyphro, the first conclusion “What is moral is not moral because it is commanded by (the) God(s)”, the premises to support this conclusion would be from James Rachel’s chapter, “Does Morality Depend on Religion?” Rachel evidences that “according to Exodus 20:16, God commands us to be truthful. On this option, the reason we should be truthful is simply that God requires it. Apart from the divine command, truth telling is neither good nor bad. It is God’s command that makes truthfulness right”. Rachel is stating that God commands us to be not to be liars and leaving the command on the side, telling the truth is neither good nor bad but it is God’s command to make the truth right. Also, Rachel states that lying would lead to trouble but God could have given us another command. For example, being liars and it would not be a bad thing because God gave us that command. Therefore, he could give us more reasons to command the opposite so, from a point of view of a moral; God’s command is a random choice. Thus, with this conclusion, we are stuck with consequences that even most religious people would find it offensive. The second conclusion “What is moral must be moral because it is commanded by (the) God(s)”, the premises to support this conclusion would be from James Rachel’s chapter, “Does Morality Depend on Religion?” Rachel defines “God, who is infinitely wise, realizes that truthfulness is better than deceitfulness, and so he commands us to be truthful; he sees that killing is wrong, and so he commands us not to kill; and so on for all the moral rules”. Rachel means that God knows what is right for a human being so he commands us to be honest and truthful because he knows that it is wrong. If we take this option, then we would abandon the conception of right and wrong because we are leaving ourselves open to a lack of reasoning. Many religious people opinions are to accept the fact of right…

During a time in our recent history when greed and self promotion was the benchmark that most financial and managerial directors of companies, both public and private, seemed to strive for, David Sokol stands out above the crowd. Instead of looking to further his own self-image, career, or standing, instead of taking what most people would view as the easy road, Mr. Sokol did the right thing. He chose ethics, morals, and a straight compass to guide his career. Was it an easy road? No, but it was the right one. Would I be able to do the same thing? I would hope so. Although we never know with 100% certainty what we would do in a specific situation, I would hope that I would handle it the same way he did.…

Within the last 5 years the company fell upon some hard times where they were losing millions of dollars a year and had their stock price drop severely. The company has recently risen to a new level due to the efforts of Executive A their CEO of the last 3 years. Within the first six months of being appointed CEO, Executive A was able to increase the stock value of the company over 125% and post a profit. Executive A is very driven, ambitious and solely focused on the success of the company. He does not like attention and usually gives the credit for the company’s success to his management team.
