Generation did not advance as much as most people hoped, but eventually, the "Third Generation" was brought about by the invention of integrated circuits in 1958. Integrated circuits replaced transistors, and many computer languages came out in this time. Many more computer companies were born during this time, and eventually this led to personal computers for everyday use. Microprocessors introduced the beginning of the "Fourth Generation" and a time where computers were in almost every house.

Computers have become one of our necessities in our daily life which makes it so hard to imagine a time when they did not really exist. And the birth of first computer occurred in 1950. It was the Electrical Numerical Integrator and Calculator or ENIAC. It was made out of 18,000 vacuum tubes which made it to consume about 180,000 watts of electrical power. However, it was only capable to give function such as multiplying numbers rapidly. Due to rapid growth in population, Census Bureau of United States decided to have a machine to tabulate the data, hence,…

The first hardware innovation that I believe to be one of the most important innovations is the processor. The reason that I believe this is because of the speed that is provides for the computer. The speed that the processor provides allows people to get the things accomplished on the computer much faster. The processor is like the brain of the computer it tells the rest of the computer what to do. The second hardware innovation that I believe to be one of the most important innovations is the memory. The reason I believe this is because the memory stores data internally in the computer. You can store as much information as you want in the memory, like for example, videos, pictures, school work, work from you job, etcetera.…

As mentioned above, many advances in computer technology were made during the 1960s. In 1963, transistors, a device that transfers electronic signals, were introduced. This invention made it possible for computers to be much smaller than computers from the 1940s (Whithaus, 2004). The early 1960s was also…

One of the most important of those advancements is the microchip. In nineteen-fifty eight, Jack Kilby from Texas instruments made the first functioning microchip. But that microchip was not available for the public to use. After a few years of development and improvement, the microchip was released to the public by Fairchild Semiconductor in nine-teen sixty one. Today, the microchip is in everyday technologies such as, cell phones, cars, computers, and many others. Another largely important advancement was the mass-producing of modems. The U.S. air defense system needed modems, so they were mass-produced. After that, modems were used in public life for computers to send information to each other and connect to the internet. Even though the same type of modem are not used today, they still helped inventors get to where we are today and the daily communication we have with cell phones. The last important technology is the credit card. However, the first credit card was not like what we have in modern day. The first was for a restaurant but all the debt needed to be paid back at the end of each month or the card would be taken away. In nine-teen fifty eight American Express had the credit card that was the most similar to current cards. Credit cards are used daily for various transactions, and are an way to buy something and continue throughout your day. Microchips, modems and credit cards may…

Following the Congress of Vienna, Europe entered into the Industrial Revolution. Beginning around 1980, the world has entered into a kind of technological revolution. Just as the Industrial Revolution was sparked by James Watt's invention of the improved steam engine, this new technological revolution was sparked by the invention of the microchip or the computer. Along with the development of digital technology…

Microprocessors have shaped how computing developed through the years. The microprocessor originated back in 1971 with the Intel 4004. It was a 4 bit BCD (Binary-Coded Decimal) oriented microprocessor. It helped advance the computer industry in ways such as giving other manufacturers a baseline to work off of and some competition in the field of microprocessors. The 4004 really was the start of microprocessing in the computer industry. This card only ran at 740 kHz which really shows the advancements that have been made up until today’s processors with 4 GHz and higher clock speeds.…

As generations come and go, they each have different qualities that separate them from the generations before. These different qualities are what makes each generation unique and each generation improves/learns from the last one. According to the dictionary, generation means a group of people born and living at about the same time. Some people wonder, what’s so significant about this generation?
