Homer’s Iliad

With the assistance of Agamemnon and Achilleus, the Achaians were able to gain the victory over the Thebe. After the war ended, in order to honor Agamemnon and Achilleus, the Achaians equally distributed their prize, in addition, Chryseis for Agamemnon and Briseus’s daughter for Achilleus. However the father of Chryseis, who happened to be the priest of Apollo, came in to ransom back his daughter. But Agamemnon refused to give her back and drove him away. The priest was horrified and angry, consequently, he prayed to Apollo for the revenge of the Achaians. Apollo heard him. Thereupon the god of sun let go his arrow which brought the chaos to the Achaians. Nine days of fire and plague was the sequence of Apollo’s arrow. To rescue the situation, Achilleus called in the bird interpreter, Kalchas, to inquire about the origin of the devastation. After knowing why Apollo became so rage with the Achaians, Achilleus then demanded Agememnon to let Chryseis go. Consequently, Agamemnon was unpleased because he felt as if Achilleus had ordered him to give his prize back. Nonetheless, without any other choice, Agamemnon sent the priest’s daughter back. Yet Agamemnon decided to take away Achilleus’s prize as his replacement. Achilleus felt irritated and considered Agamemnon’s action as a big disgrace of his pride. In short, Agamemnon felt it’s unfair that he had to return his prize and became the victim of the unjustifiable prize distribution. While on the other hand, Achilleus felt that he had been dishonored after Agamemnon had taken away his prize. In my opinion, there is one thing very similar in both cases. That is, even though both Achilleus and Agamemnon was a great warrior but, at that very moment, they have no other option but accept the condition. In Agamemnon’s case, I think that he knowing that the survival of the Achaians have to come first. Likewise, Achilleus was warned by the goddess, Athena, to suppress his anger.

My two subtopics are about Ithaca and the Underworld. First, Ithaca is the main place of the plot of the Odyssey. Ithaca is the home island of Odysseus, the husband of Penelope and the father of Telemachus. Odysseus struggled 10 years to return home after the decade-long Trojan War. After Odysseus returned, he took back Ithaca's throne. In addition, his wife Penelope and his son Telemachus stave off suitors’ competition for Penelope's hand and Ithaca's throne for Odysseus to return. Furthermore, Eumaeus and Eurycleia were two important characters who lived in Ithaca. They helped Odysseus to reclaim his throne after he returned to Ithaca. The final battle in the story happened in this place when Odysseus reclaimed Ithaca’s throne and killed…

In the first six books of the Iliad Agamemnon goes through the rite of passage, which evolves his character from a strong, centralized, authoritative leader to an incompetent selfish individual due to the crucible of beauty, the empowerment of Chryseis. The rite of passage of Agamemnon does not operate chronologically but starts with the state of liminality, his choice of rejecting ransom from Chryses, the separation, his diminishment as an extraordinary leader, and finally the partial fulfillment, his acquisition of Briseis leading to the rage of Achilleus.…

Have you ever had a remarkably good host? Can you recall what about the host made him or her great? Rather, have you ever had a very bad host? What was wrong with the host, so that you would remember how bad he or she was? In The Odyssey by Homer, hosts are also quite important, debatably more important than they are today. Back in the days of ancient Greece, hosts were expected to be helpful and hospitable and they were expected to serve their guests well, with generosity.…

If Achilleus acted more mature and reconciled with Agamemnon instead of becoming in love with his anger, Patroklos would have no reason to fight for the Achaians. From the beginning of the epic we see that Achilleus is the cause of Patroklos’ death because his request is the reason for Patroklos to fight and die. When Patroklos fights for Achilleus, he asks if he can borrow Achilleus’ armor. Borrowing the armor signifies Achilleus allowing Patroklos to commit suicide. On the Trojan side, everyone knows to target Achilleus when and if he decides to fight. When Patroklos steps onto the battlefield in Achilleus’ armor, he places a target on his back. The Trojans know Achilleus is the best warrior and his armor is very valuable; Achilleus knows this as well, but he still allows Patroklos to fight in the battle. Not only does Achilleus’ armor kill Patroklos because it is a beacon in the battle, but also because it seems to give Patroklos some of Achilleus’ childish traits. Throughout the epic we see that Achilleus feels as if he is better than the gods. The most similar display of Achilleus-like traits is when Patroklos ignores Apollo and continues to attack the Trojans:…

“The Greeks have … last speech began” a defensive start to his statement. Here he does not refer to the specifics of why the quarrel began in the first place, but instead says that the Greeks insult him many times, which is what Achilles had done as well, so it’s technically not his fault. Here Agamemnon’s mood shows how he is on the defensive to start with, as he knows he must apologise but he has many reasons as to why he is not to be blamed. Here he is…

"Yes, Chryses approached the Achaeans' fast ships to win his daughter back, bringing a priceless ransom and bearing high in hand, wound on a golden staff, the wreaths of the god, the distant deadly Archer. He begged the whole Achaean army but most of all the two supreme commanders, Atreus' two sons, ‘Agamemnon, Menelaus – all Argives geared for war! May the gods who hold the halls of Olympus give you Priam's city to plunder, then safe passage home. Just my daughter free, my dear one… here, accept these gifts, this ransom. Honor the god who strikes from worlds away – the son of Zeus, Apollo!' And all ranks of Achaeans cried out their assent: "Respect the priest, accept the shining ransom!" But it brought no joy to the heart of Agamemnon. The king dismissed the priest with a brutal order ringing in his ears: "Never again, old man, let me catch sight of you by the hollow ships! Not loitering now, not slinking back tomorrow. The staff and the wreaths of god will never save you then.…

Honor and glory are central to the Greek character. Since heroes are the essence of the society from which they come, Greek heroes live their lives according to honor and glory, in all their varied forms. Honor and glory trigger an epic war that takes the lives of numerous men, and shape its development at every stage. The fall of Troy is "a thing… whose glory shall perish never (Homer, Iliad 2.324)". The goal of the Greeks is the fame that resounds even after death, and they let nothing bar their way. The honor of the individual, family, and community guide every action and response. Honor and glory define the hero, and therefore are the foundations for everything that comes to pass in Homer's Iliad.…

I believe that Agamemnon is a protagonist character with selfish intentions in the play, Agamemnon. Although, he does make a few errors in his period of ruling. Overall, I believe he is a hubris person as he holds great pride in himself, his actions and his decisions. I believe that his intentions of his actions are only meant for his own benefit and that he believes no one else’s value should be more than his value. He has very little effect but, a very important role in the storyline. He could not have changed or effected any actions that occur from the moment of his victory from Tory to his death because of the mistakes he had committed early in his life, such as the sacrifice of his daughter. Despite his previous mistakes, he continued to make decisions for his personal advantage, such as bringing Cassandra as his Trojan princess.…

The character I have chosen from The Iliad, "Book VI," is Hektor, leader of the Trojan army as being heroic. I read "Book VI" several times because I could sympathize with Hektor 's choices and dilemma. Hektor will stop at nothing to help the Trojans fight the war against the Greeks and Achilleus, as the Greeks attempt to overtake Troy. Zeus promises Hektor divine help with a victory for the Trojans, but Hektor makes mistakes when he misjudges his own power and refuses to retreat. Hektor is too proud to retreat. These mistakes cause Hektor to be taken down by Achilleus. "Let me at least not die without a struggle, inglorious, but do some big thing first, that men to come shall know of it" (Mack et. al. 146). Even when Hektor knows that he cannot win against Achilleus, his attempt to win honor in battle continues, and his death is eminent.…

Although Agamemnon was not the one to take part in the original cursing of his house, he was a key player in the continuing curse that plagued his house and therefore caused Clytemnestra and Aegisthus to murder him and Cassandra. Cassandra even foretells that Orestes will come to take his father’s revenge against Clytemnestra and Aegisthus on page 54 she says “a third shall come to take up our cause, a son resolved to kill his mother, honouring his father’s blood.” We do not see what is done to Clytemnestra or Aegisthus in Agamemnon, but we can only think that it will be as gruesome as the deaths of Agamemnon and Cassandra. Thus the never ending cycle of revenge still plagues the house of Atreus. The story of Oedipus is very different from that of Agamemnon because it was the whole house of Atreus that had been cursed, while only Oedipus himself was cursed in Oedipus Rex.…
